Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.License:

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.Residency Training:

Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.English Language:

Proficiency in spoken and written English.Preferred Experience:Board eligible and/or certified in anesthesiology.Clinical practice and management experience.Experience providing regional anesthesia.Experience in an ambulatory surgery center environment.Physical Requirements:

Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; Light lifting, under 15 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (6 hours); Standing (6 hours); Both legs required; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid may be permitted); Mental/emotional stability; Ability to perform privileges; Independently performs physical exam as appropriate.DUTIES:

The Anesthesiologist is responsible for direct patient care, clinical/administrative supervision of other anesthesia providers, and education of perioperative staff as well as students and residents when required. The service line reports to the Chief of Surgery and will actively participate in supporting the Chief with analysis and proposals to improve productivity, efficiency, and quality of perioperative care. Primary place of employment is Harlingen but there may be occasions requiring travel to other facilities affiliated with VA TX Valley Coastal Bend to meet patient needs.The anesthesiologist is responsible for ensuring that the complex mission of the Anesthesiology section is met in all phases of patient care, education, and research/administrative functions. Provides direct anesthesia care to perioperative patients and demonstrates understanding of diagnostic and therapeutic parameters as pertain to individual comorbidities and their implications in anesthetic care. Provides consultative services regarding anesthesia recommendations. Performs peer review for anesthesia providers internally as well as on request from other facilities. Clinically and administratively supervises other anesthesia providers. Provides guidelines for perioperative anesthetic care and develops educational programs for future residents and students.
