Position OverviewAn opportunity has arisen for a Research Scientist to join our team that specializes in the development of next generation lithium-ion cell technology. The ideal candidate will have a strong preference for hands-on lab work with a record of achievement in the areas of Li-ion batteries, materials chemistry, and/or electrochemistry. The Research Scientist will initially focus on advanced materials and electrode-level developments for prelithiation technologies, with a focus on applications in the NMC- and the LFP-based systems. Other responsibilities/opportunities include supporting the materials- and electrode-level design for the advanced solid-state battery systems towards the goal of developing scalable processes for the commercialization of this next generation battery system.The successful candidate will be laboratory-based and will take ownership of advanced material and electrode development for advanced lithium-ion battery technologies. Primary job responsibilities include generating new ideas and approaches in accordance with A123’s technology roadmap, coordinating and conducting experiments, and supporting the scale-up efforts. Attending to these responsibilities will require working closely with engineers and scientists co-located in A123’s Waltham facility as well as in the engineering headquarters in Hangzhou, China.

Primary ResponsibilitiesDevelop, coordinate and conduct experiments to develop novel prelithiation and related electrode enhancing materials and evaluate their electrochemical performanceOptimize the electrode formulation and support the efforts to scale up corresponding materials, mixing and coating methodsDesign and build single- and multi-layer cells to measure key metrics and demonstrate technology benefitsPerform cell teardown and root-cause analysis when neededDocument results, prepare reports, and present findings to cross-functional teams as well as leadershipContribute to generation of intellectual propertyQualificationsThe ideal candidate will have a strong background in Materials Science and Electrochemistry, and has a record of achievement in the area of Li-ion batteries, materials, chemistry, or related fieldsBachelor or Master’s degree with 5+ years of industrial experience, ideally in the lithium ion battery field (Less experience required for candidates with advanced degrees)Experience with material-level development for lithium-ion batteries preferredExpertise with a range of advanced processing and analytical techniques for powders and slurriesExperience with full-cell test and analysis of lithium-ion batteries is a plusDrives for Results - The passion to set and meet high standards of performanceDrives Accountability - The ability to establish clear, measurable goals and deliver on commitments
