FLSA: Non-ExemptOccupational Summary

Coordinate and participate in the overall operation of the instructional facilities for studio arts, including safety, stocking, training, equipment maintenance, and supervision. Facilities include but are not limited to: Sculpture studio (primary area of support), Printmaking studio, and Painting & Drawing studio. This position reports to the Department Chair.Work PerformedSafety (20%)Ensure that studio facilities meet safety standards and that hazardous materials are consistently stored and disposed of in compliance with regulations and policies;Serve as point-of-contact with Fire Marshall and OESO (Duke's Occupational & Environmental Safety Office) as needed;Keep current with relevant safety codes and regulatory matters, and advise faculty and department administration on those topics;Perform equipment maintenance as needed; make recommendations regarding equipment purchases.Access/supervision (50%)Ensure staffing for regular open-studio hours so students can use the studios to work on their projects outside of class time;Hire, train and supervise student assistants as appropriate;Consult with studio faculty each semester to determine access needs and level of supervision required based on the specific courses on the schedule.Training/consulting (20%)Develop procedures and standards for the use of the studios by students and faculty that accommodate the needs of users and ensure a safe working environment;Provide instruction and directions in the use of studio equipment, in the form of training workshops, individual instruction, or assistance during class time or open studio.Stocking/Organization (10%)Coordinate the purchasing of instructional supplies with studio faculty and the department's finance staff; develop and implement a clear organization of supplies and materials to assist with inventory tracking;Maintain and monitor financial records for studio expenses including labor expenses.Qualifications

Work requires knowledge of operation and safety protocols for art-related fabrication equipment normally acquired through a BFA or MFA in a studio-based art practice.

Work generally requires two years of experience as a studio assistant or similar position to acquire strong skills in the use and operation of art practice-related products and equipment, safety best-practices, and overall studio management.
