Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.RequirementsThe Student Media Advisor acts as the department liaison to the student media groups and meets regularly with the editorial staff of each print publication (not more than five organizations) to review the recent issues of the paper, commenting extensively on the writing, style, format, and newsworthiness of the issue. They ensure that the production of the paper is an educational experience for student journalists and presents workshops on best practices in journalism on the multiple topics. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Engagement, the Student Media Advisor interacts with students by phone or email to discuss emergent issues and appropriate approaches to stories, and has additional duties that include but are not limited t o:+ Meet regularly with the editorial staff of each print publication (not more than five organizations) to review the recent issues of the paper, commenting extensively on the writing, style, format and newsworthiness of the issue.+ Ensure that the production of the paper is an educational experience for student journalists, incorporating personal and organizational development along with writing or editorial skill development.+ Talk with students by phone or email to discuss emergent issues and appropriate approaches to stories, discussing conflicts of interests and advising on potentially libelous material.+ Meet with leaders of proposed or new publications to evaluate plans for organizational viability and stability, consulting periodically with university administrators on issues related to student journalism.+ Present workshops every year/semester on best practices in journalism on the following topics: Foundations of journalistic writing and editing focused on news, sports, arts, opinion and visual presentation; Ethics and standards in journalism; Best practices in reporting on sensitive subjects, including sexual assault and misconduct, suicide, and death; and Social media strategies.+ Meet with Students Business teams for the newspaper, magazine, radio, and TV to discuss options for revenue generation, consulting in the development of plans when needed.+ Help students identify and apply for internships and jobs in journalism, writing recommendations for students applying for internships and jobs.+ Attend CSE meetings or events when available.Requirements and Qualifications+ Bachelors in Journalism, Communications, or related field; Masters degree preferred+ Two to Three years of relevant experience in Journalism, Communications, Editing, or related fields+ Strong communication skills and a high degree of discretion with regard to sensitive matters of student decision making and leadership behavior+ Ability to take an educational approach to advising students through difficult, sensitive, and public situationsWork Mode DesignationThis position has been designated as Telework.
