St. Peter Catholic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina is seeking a full time Director of Music Ministry.

St. Peter, a welcoming center city parish with over 1000 families, is the oldest Catholic Church in Charlotte, having been founded in 1851. A parish of the Charlotte diocese, St. Peter has been staffed by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) since 1986. Members of the parish come from the entire Charlotte metropolitan area.

The Director reports directly to the pastor of the parish and oversees all aspects of liturgical music in the parish in coordination with the pastor and the parish liturgy committee.

ResponsibilitiesThe Director is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of music for all liturgical events of the parish, including all weekend Masses and weekday Masses at which music will be offered, special liturgical celebrations, weddings, and funerals.

The position requires musical proficiency in organ, piano, voice and choral direction, as well as a thorough knowledge of Catholic liturgical tradition, norms, and guidelines. The Director must have knowledge of and a willingness to incorporate a wide variety of Catholic liturgical music forms and styles, including both traditional and contemporary hymns and songs.

The Director provides or arranges for musical accompaniment for all parish liturgical events, including the recruitment and supervision of accompanists and other musicians as required. The Director recruits and trains cantors and choir members, schedules the assignments of cantors, serves as director of the adult choir and manages the creation and development of other choirs and liturgical music groups in the parish. The Director promotes and encourages congregational singing through effective interaction and communication with members of the parish and must have the skill and temperament necessary for introducing and teaching new liturgical music to the congregation at large. The Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the parish music library and budgeting for the parish music ministry.

RequirementsCandidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree in music, with a master’s degree in music preferred, and 3+ years of experience in a church liturgical music position.Candidates should have a comprehensive knowledge of Roman Catholic teachings and practices, manifest a respect for and willingness to uphold such teachings and practices, must possess strong written and oral communication skills and must demonstrate a passion and love for liturgical music.Excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism, including in sometimes stressful or challenging situations, are essential.Candidates must have dexterity and coordination in their hands and feet and be able to do extensive walking, stairs, and sitting.Candidates will be required before hiring to complete the Safe Environment program which includes a background check.
