Job Description

The Wellesley College Art Department seeks a skilled technician with a strong foundation in art-making techniques and a deep understanding of digital technologies for art production. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in photo and video, installations, and be knowledgeable about fine art printing materials, fabrication, and interdisciplinary art forms.

This position requires excellent organizational and managerial abilities to effectively support a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students with varying levels of technological expertise. The technician will provide essential support for multimedia instruction across the Art Department, which includes Studio Art, Art History, Cinema and Media Studies, Media Arts and Sciences, and Architecture majors. This is a full time, 11 - month academic year assignment.

Primary ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be a collaborative team member capable of working effectively in a dynamic environment.Providing front-line support for technology equipment, including a lighting studio, darkroom, digital print labs, and video editing suites.Assisting faculty and students with classroom assignments and projects involving multimedia technology.Managing inventory and supplies, such as specialized paper and darkroom chemicals.Conducting technical workshops on darkroom safety, studio equipment, digital printing methods, and alternative photographic processes.Equipment and Facility Management

Manage, maintain, and purchase equipment and supplies for photography, video, multimedia, and digital fabrication labs in the Art Department, including the Art Cage, lighting studio, darkroom, digital print labs, video editing suites, and related equipment (cameras, lenses, computers, scanners, etc.).Monitor and maintain a safe and clean environment in all lab spaces, including digital fabrication studios, editing suites, lighting studio, computer labs, and darkroom.Manage inventory and purchasing for 2D supplies, specialty paper, and consumables for laser cutter, vacuform machine, RISO, large-format inkjet printers, and 3D printers.Staff Supervision and Training

Hire, train, and supervise up to 19 hours per week of student staff to assist with lab operations, equipment checkout, and student support.Hire, train, and supervise up to 2 hours per week of student staff for darkroom monitoring and maintenance. Provide training on equipment operation and safety protocols for students and faculty.Technical Support and Development

Provide technical support for faculty, staff, and students in utilizing multimedia technology for classroom instruction and student projects.Research and implement new A/V presentation technologies and systems to support teaching and production needs.Collaborate with colleagues on interdepartmental projects and committees.Key Responsibilities Summary

Oversee the management and maintenance of art and media production facilities and equipment. Supervise student staff to support lab operations.Provide technical support and training to faculty and students. Stay current with technology trends and best practices.Collaborate with colleagues on campus initiatives.Basic Qualifications

BA or BFA required.Minimum two years of professional experience in photography or video production, including work in print labs, darkrooms, and lighting studios.Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated proficiency in photography, video, digital media, and audio-visual technologies.Essential experience troubleshooting Mac OS (10.4 and above).Proven ability to train, manage, and supervise staff and students in an academic setting.Strong technical skills in photo, video, audio, and lighting equipment, including darkroom processes, digital printing, video production, and lighting studio operation. Proficiency in software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Maya, Photoshop, Animate, AutoCAD, Max, Unity, and other relevant digital imaging and audio software is required.Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work independently.Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.Valid driver's license.Company Description
