We value the opportunity to consider those who believe they have the necessary skills and ambition to succeed at NREL.****Job Description**The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Communications Office has an opening for an adaptable, energetic, and collaborative communications professional to support communications for transportation work within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The successful candidate will help tell DOE’s story through a variety of communication channels, as well as manage multiple moderately complex communications projects. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communications and writing skills, meticulous attention to detail and quality, exhibit the ability to maintain strong working relationships with clients and team members, be adept at project management, and be comfortable working in and navigating ambiguous requests.The selected candidate will work under supervision as part of NREL’s Communications Office, which includes teams representing NREL’s wide-ranging research areas. This group is structured in an agency- like setting and includes project managers, writers, editors, web developers, and designers. You will develop and execute digital and traditional communications tactics in parallel, while delivering superior client service. Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.Duties will include:+ Serving as a communications representative, including as the day-to-day point of contact with clients, developing annual communications plans, and managing communications deliverables+ Leading the development, design, editing, and publication of presentations, reports, and other outreach materials that follow established branding and style guidelines+ Writing engaging stories that celebrate and elevate clean transportation deployment successes through news articles, outreach materials, social media, newsletters, and presentation materials+ Developing, editing, and publishing web content, following established web standards and best practices+ Coordinating internal processes to support clients and communication project leads+ Building and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and clients.Successful candidates will have:+ Strong writing and storytelling skills+ Good project management skills, including leading tasks and developing and managing budgets and schedules+ Demonstrated attention to detail and quality+ Nimbleness needed to multitask in a fast-paced communications agency-like setting+ Strong client service mindset+ Ability to react positively to and navigate rapidly changing circumstances+ General knowledge of web and digital media best practices+ Experience leading projects such as newsletters, websites, social media, webinars, and print materials+ Previous experience working in a project management tool such as Asana, Smartsheet, ClickUp, etc.+ Ability to distill technical information into understandable and engaging content+ Can-do attitude and collaborative work style+ Eight or more years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field, preferably in an area of science.Preferred Qualifications+ Previous science-, transportation-, energy-sector, government-, technology-, or research- related communications experience+ Experience creating communications strategies and content+ Experience adhering to an in-house style guide, AP style, and/or Chicago Manual of Style+ Experience working in a web content management system+ Prior roles in a communication/public relations/advertising agency or similar corporate/organization department+ Familiarity with transportation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency technologies, and/or other technical subject matter..**Basic Qualifications**Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills.
