The Assistant Vice President for Development Marketingand Communications (AVP) is responsible for leadingand integrating the functions that build and enhance the reputationof UW Medicine. The AVP will focus most of their effort onstrengthening the relationships with donors, friends, volunteers,alumni and the general public in a direct effort to increasephilanthropic support for UW Medicine. This position will be adriving force as UW Medicine Advancement prepares to launch itsnext campaign while ensuring alignment with UW Medicine andUniversity of Washington brand and organizational goals.

To this end, the AVP will serve as a collaborator and confidentadvisor to UW Medicine Advancement’s Chief Advancement Officer/VicePresident for Medical Affairs and three Associate Vice Presidents;UW Medicine’s: Chief Communications Officer and several leaders inthat department, CEO/Executive Vice President for Medical Affairsand Dean of the School of Medicine; as well as University andUniversity Advancement leaders, academic leaders, volunteers, andother advancement staff to plan, administer, and direct thecommunications and special events activities that supportfundraising and in conjunction with future fundraisingcampaigns.

This position will be a key leader on the UW Medicine Advancementteam in driving strategic communications and events that cultivateand steward donors and prospective donors across the integratedclinical, research and learning health system with a single missionto improve the health of the public.

The AVP will lead efforts of the UW Medicine AdvancementCommunications teams (Digital Engagement, Brand and Creative andStrategic Communications teams) to develop strategic communicationsto help ensure overall fundraising success. They will oversee theefforts of the UW Medicine Advancement Events team to providestrategic direction and leadership for UW Medicine’s specialevents, with the goal of creating inspiring and meaningfulexperiences that cultivate and steward donors and prospectivedonors and showcase the impact of philanthropic giving at UWMedicine.

The AVP will assist in the creation, dissemination and adaption ofUW Medicine Advancement’s brand and messaging platform for currentand future giving priorities, including for the future fundraisingcampaign. They will develop and lead a comprehensive donor,prospective donor, and alumni engagement plan in partnership withUW Medicine Advancement fundraisers and alumni staff thatincorporates innovative and measurable strategies and tacticsacross multiple programs and functions.

They will foster a culture of collaboration and open communicationacross functions and teams at UW Medicine Advancement in order tosupport and inform one another’s work, as well as to support thework and goals of the fundraising teams. They will developsuccessful partnerships with UW Medicine Strategic Marketing &Communications and University Marketing and Communications in orderto maximize opportunities for partnership. They will partner withthe Assistant Vice President for Campaign for UW Medicine todevelop an engagement plan that drives philanthropy for campaignpriorities.

The AVP supervises four teams of diverse programmatic staff, with15 total staff members. The four teams include: the Brand andCreative Team, the Digital Engagement Team, the Special EventsTeam, and the Strategic Communications Team. The AVP has threedirect reports, including the Senior Director for Engagement andCommunications, the Director of Strategic Communications, and theDirector of Brand and Creative. The AVP will build and maintain afully integrated, highly efficient team in order to best supportthe communications and special events needs of UW MedicineAdvancement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy (40%)

• Set and oversee the implementation of the strategiccommunications and events direction for UW Medicine Advancement’spriorities and fundraising initiatives.

• In partnership with UW Medicine Advancement’s leadership, createand set communications and events strategies and tactics for amulti-year, multi-faceted approach to fundraising, includingdecisions regarding resources allocation and budget administrationfor communications and events.

• Develop and implement campaign communications and eventsstrategies to support campaign priorities across the UW Medicineintegrated health system, and when applicable, in alignment withUniversity Initiatives and intra-institutional fundraisingpartnerships.

• Develop and execute advancement marketing strategies that supporta culture of philanthropy in the UW Medicine health system inalignment with state and federal (HIPAA) privacy regulations.

• Represent UW Medicine Advancement on UW Medicine, UniversityAdvancement, and other University-wide marketing and communicationscommittees, as well as with partner organizations.

• Keep up to date with latest trends in Advancement marketing andcommunications; implementing new strategic approaches toeffectively communicate with donors and other stakeholders.

• Understand and apply metrics and key performance indicators todemonstrate ROI of communications and events in support offundraising goals.

Communications (30%)

• Provide leadership and oversight of the UW Medicine AdvancementStrategic Communications team, Brand and Creative team, and DigitalEngagement team that is responsible for outreachactivities/projects in support of alumni/fundraising communications(print/online), message development, and overall fundraisingsuccess.

• Work with UW and UW Medicine colleagues to ensure thatadvancement and alumni materials comply with applicable brandstandards — in both message and design.

• In collaboration with UW and UW Medicine marketing andcommunications partners, implement and oversee the communicationsplan for UW Medicine Advancement’s next comprehensive fundraisingcampaign, including drafting executive leadership communicationsand major gift announcements.

• Partner with UW Medicine Advancement senior leadership,fundraisers and UW Medicine faculty and staff to facilitate thecreation of campaign case statements and proposals that representthe priorities outlined in the campaign plan.

• Current communication projects include but are not limited to:electronic newsletters; creative for online giving campaigns; theproduction of a consolidated website; and design/editorial supportfor donor cases and proposals, Alumni programs, Donor Relations,Annual Philanthropy, Campaign initiatives and others. Thecommunications team will also provide strategic partnership anddesign support to the special events team.

Special Events (30%)

• Working closely with the Senior Director for Communications andEngagement and the Director for Special Events, the AVP willprovide leadership and oversight for the team that implements UWMedicine Advancement and UW Medicine Alumni special events — 50+events each year that range from highly-visible fundraising eventsto major gift cultivation and stewardship events.

• While reinforcing UW Medicine’s mission, ensure that specialevents directly support and generate visibility for fundraisingpriorities, including facilitating conversations around major andprincipal gifts.

• Develop and implement events that align with fundraising andcampaign priorities, including campaign launch events and specialevents, often in partnership with Medicine Advancement seniorleadership and fundraisers and/or campaign volunteerleadership.

• Work with the Director of Alumni Relations to create synergybetween the alumni and advancement programs.

CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• This individual will be responsible for events outside theregular business day on a regular basis. Some evening and weekendwork is required.

• The successful candidate will be expected to have regular,reliable transportation for local travel and be willing to travelwhen necessary.

In this capacity, this position is responsible for hiring,performance appraisals, promotions/reclassifications, salaryadjustments, disciplinary actions and/or handlingcomplaints/grievances.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in any field or an equivalent combination ofeducation and experience.

• Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience innon-profit or institutional advancement, marketing and publicrelations, special events or a related field with expertise incommunications.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimumqualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as alicense/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in a fundraising or development setting in healthcareand/or higher education

• Experience leading the communications and engagement plan of acampaign, preferably in an academic medicine setting
