Location: New Orleans or Baton Rouge, LA

Company: The Times-Picayune | NOLA.com

Position Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic Investigative Editor to lead our watchdog coverage across Louisiana. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the nuances of investigative journalism, a passion for local and state news, and the ability to guide a diverse team of reporters and editors on both aggressive deadline investigative reporting and investigative project work. The right candidate will be a strong writer and compassionate leader who can juggle an array of responsibilities. Candidates should also be committed to growing our reach -- and our subscribers -- through multiple platforms, including our website, social media, newsletters, and yes, still in print.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leadership & Management:
    • Oversee investigative reporting statewide, including hiring, training, and mentoring both reporters and working with many editors.
    • Collaborate closely with the digital team to produce innovative and engaging content that builds audiences and subscribers.
    • Assign stories, manage workflow, and ensure timely, accurate, and ambitious, fair-minded, engaging coverage.
    • Use audience analytics to understand reader interests and adapt coverage to meet their needs.
  • Editorial Strategy:
    • Work with the Editor and managing editors to implement strategic initiatives that align with the organization's goals.
    • Identify key stories and trends that are relevant to our readership and prioritize coverage accordingly.
    • Balance fast work off the news with long-term work.
  • Content Oversight:
    • Ensure all content meets the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and clarity.
    • Edit articles for substance, style, and tone, providing constructive feedback to reporters.
  • Engagement:
    • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, stakeholders, and sources to enhance coverage.
    • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture within the newsroom.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a newsroom environment.
  • Exceptional editing skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to make quick, informed decisions.
  • Deep understanding of digital journalism and the evolving media landscape.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
