DTEI's Digital and Online Teaching (DOT) team focuses on supporting faculty in enhancing teaching and pedagogical innovations with the principles of UDL and learning experience design and effective use of digital learning tools to foster learning engagement for student academic success. Our goal is to increase the faculty's passion and confidence in digital pedagogy, AI literacy, and inclusive course design for various modes of teaching to promote and raise awareness of digital learning excellence and quality online teaching innovations at UC Irvine.

Your Role on the Team

Under the general direction of the Director of Digital and Online Teaching (DOT), the Instructional Designer (ID) serves as an innovative resource, providing teaching consultation, training workshops, and technology-enhanced teaching support. They assist faculty in determining suitable pedagogical approaches, designing course elements and layouts, implementing digital active learning strategies, and embracing inclusive teaching practices to enhance students' learning experience. The ID helps faculty meet their pedagogical goals that support the various learning needs of all students by assisting in designing learning experiences and identifying the appropriate use of learning technologies. In addition, the ID is an integral part of the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) team, working in close collaboration with other staff to design and deliver educational development programs within DTEI. This collaborative approach ensures faculty feel included and part of a supportive community, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. The goal is to cultivate an inclusive and interactive learning environment that maximizes students' academic success.

The ID is also expected to be well-versed in web development, emerging technologies, generative AI for education, multimedia production, accessibility guidelines, and universal course design for learning (UDL). This expertise ensures that the ID is equipped to handle a wide range of instructional design needs, instilling confidence in the team's capabilities.

Uses skills of instructional design and multimedia development as an experienced professional to help shape curricular content into coherent instructional modules that employ multimedia and a variety of interactive, web-based tools aimed at encouraging the engagement of students and other learners in knowledge acquisition. Demonstrates high degree of collaboration and diplomacy as well as problem analysis and creative solutions. Solves complex content or delivery related issues in collaboration with technical teams. Interacts with senior internal and external personnel. Normally receives little direction for ongoing course development assignments.

Experience building online courses. Experience in providing faculty teaching consultation and support.Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems.Thorough knowledge of applying adult learning theories and educational methodologies.Thorough knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.).Advanced level skills in application of planning, resourcing and monitoring of effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the organization.Knowledge to conduct appropriate job and task analyses in the context of instructional design of technical or specialized training. Experience in developing faculty development programs or training workshopsFamiliar with ADA policy with experience in creating accessible instructional materials and web pagesFamiliar with copyright and fair use guidelines for online educationExperience in supporting faculty in designing inclusive learning environment as well as multimedia production, such as audio/video production, graphic/animation design, elearning module development, etc.Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training2+ years of Instructional Designer experience for a higher education institution.

Preferred:Familiar with Quality Matters Rubric and/or OLC Quality ScorecardExperience in managing department communication on web platforms, blog, social media, etc.Familiar with the generative AI for teaching.
