OverviewThe communications manager is a full-time position (exempt/salaried) reporting to the director of operations with the primary responsibilities of implementing external communications and supporting design and publication projects.The communications manager will be a valued member of the team at Chinati, and we anticipate the role will be a professionally transformative experience for an early career candidate interested in communications and publishing in the arts. The communications manager will work collaboratively across departments, and in close collaboration with the programs manager to ensure the full range of Chinati’s programs and activities are reflected in Chinati’s communications program and goals. The communications manager will represent Chinati in correspondence, meetings, programs, and at public events.Working closely with the director and other senior staff, the communications manager will participate in creating an annual communications plan and will manage the tasks and activities outlined in that plan.Position DescriptionExternal Communications Management (40%)Work closely with each department to develop content and an ongoing calendar of communications for social media, email, and Chinati’s website.Develop and manage workflows for planning and drafting content, seeking review and approval, and sharing.Contribute to the writing and editing of materials generated by the development department, including solicitation letters and invitations.Collaborate with the development team on communications and events with Board of Trustees, funders, members, and prospects.·Attend local events on behalf of Chinati, serving as an engaged public-facing ambassador for the organization.·Monitor social media activity and increase engagement.·Serve as the administrator of Chinati’s website and point-of-contact for edits to its media and content.·Work closely with development on fundraising communications and marketing calendar, strategy, and content.Design & Publications Management (40%)Coordinate with outside graphic designers, photographers, copy editors, printers, and the programs manager on printed matter (brochures, posters, signage, invitations, etc.), Chinati’s annual newsletter, and other publications.Contribute to the writing and editing of materials generated by the development director and director.Serve as the project manager for the annual newsletter, working with contributors and internal team to set deadlines, track progress, coordinate next steps, and gather image assets.Press & Media (20%)·Coordinate public relations and press strategy.Field press inquiries and fulfill stock image requests in a timely manner, seeking approvals from artists and their estates as needed.Write and distribute press releases.Liaise with press and serve as primary media contact in collaboration with an external communications consultant.Coordinate and oversee photographers, videographers to document Chinati’s programs and activities.Manage stock photography assets and data.QualificationsAn interest in and familiarity with modern and contemporary art, including Chinati’s collection and exhibition history.Excellent writing and written communication skills. Strong proofreading and copyediting skills; attention to typography, grammar, context, and voice.Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels and juggle multiple deadlines.2 years of relevant experience; experience in a non-profit art/culture organization is a plusExperience with social media, website, and email management tools, such as Buffer, WordPress, and Constant Contact.Graphic design experience.Spanish language a plus.Strong organizational and time management skills.A valid driver’s license.
