POSITION SUMMARYThe Graphic Designer works closely with the Zoo’s Advancement staff to oversee and maintain the zoo’s brand and visual aesthetic. Working closely with senior designers and leadership, they provide layout and design for printed materials, online and digital applications, and other deliverables to advance the mission of the zoo. These deliverables may include advertisements, print mailers, emails, social media designs, website content, and on-grounds signs from conceptualization, design, distribution, as well as in performing detailed follow-up. The Graphic Designer serves in a support role to the team on the completion of multiple projects and will be tasked to assist by performing a variety of different moderately complex functions. This position should be comfortable with some of the roles of leadership as it works closely with other internal departments and external constituencies to organize and produce materials as requested.Utah’s Hogle Zoo has been a loved and trusted part of the community for over 90 years. If that is something that excites and inspires you, then we look forward to talking!REPORTING RELATIONSHIPReports directly to the Director of Advancement.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCoordinate and maintain brand standard through designing assets, templates, and communicating with various departments to educate on upholding the standard.Design, produce, and maintain Zoo signs. Work with senior designers and various other Zoo departments to ensure all signs meet the informational and aesthetic needs of the Zoo and the public. This will require some physical work with signs of various sizes and weights.Collaborate with Marketing team to strategically design all assets for marketing such as billboards, digital ads, mailers, and other collateral posted to external audiences.Coordinate with various Zoo departments to design, provide layouts and illustrate printed and digital materials for internal and external audiences.Coordinate with external creative consultants and printers to produce materials as requested.Communicate and coordinate production of various projects with external print vendors and digital creative vendors.Maintain and catalog a database of photos and videos. Coordinate with other departments to photograph/film events and prepare media library.Manage in-house print production on large-format printer. Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting on printer to ensure proper functionality.Manage all digital information screens on property – design collateral, manage scheduling, and troubleshooting.Prioritize and independently manage multiple projects at any given time with strict deadlines.Perform other duties as assigned.Maintain strict confidentiality.Ability to work overtime as needed.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEBachelor’s degree and/or certificate in visual arts, graphic design, or graphic communication highly preferred but equivalent professional experience acceptable.Professional portfolio demonstrating proficiency in graphic design, branding, layout design, typography, and attention to detail required.At least 4 years of experience in graphic design in professional commercial design, preferably in a non-profit or agency setting.Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is required. Lightroom and Procreate experience is preferred.Experience with web design is preferred.Experience with large-format printers is preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESProficient with Microsoft Office products.Able to condense information into a cohesive plan and be able to communicate and execute those plans under the direction of senior staff effectively and efficiently.Ability to listen and provide feedback to hone skills and improve designs.Ability to function equally under own initiative as well as under instruction.Ability to adjust to changes in scheduling, and general flexibility in the work environment.Communicate clearly and effectively.Critical listening skills.Ability to stay positive and calm in stressful situations.Organization and attention to detail.Demonstrate proficiency working on multiple projects at once.Self-motivated, and able to manage time effectively with an ability to complete work quickly and efficiently.Strong knowledge of both print and digital processes.The incumbent must always demonstrate judgment, high integrity, and personal values consistent with the values of the Hogle Zoo.Working knowledge of wildlife and nature is preferred.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe incumbent performs in a typical office setting, with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities which do not generally involve muscular strain, but do require activities related to walking, standing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Requires occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.Utah’s Hogle Zoo is a drug-free workplace.
