The Hired Guns are seeking a seasoned writer for a Sports Editor role with a digital-first Texas-based publication.The Nitty GrittyThe backstory on the company and why they need to hire you!A major player in the pop culture scene in Houston is expanding its editorial team — and they’re on the hunt for a fan-forward Sports Editor who still likes to write.In this role, which is a mix of assigning and editing coverage (and writing your own stuff), you will own the nuts and bolts of sports news coverage across all of the professional teams in Houston and the state of Texas as well as key Lone Star State college sports teams. This will include daily game coverage, breaking news, events, and stories on key athletes and beyond, while also working to drive fan-based conversations surrounding the local teams and ensure sports are being covered through an authoritative Houston perspective. Sports editors here turn around quick articles (think game highlights and teammate disputes) while also combing social outlets for trending stories, looking for interesting angles, and starting new conversations on site and on social media.Why You?How you’ll know if you’re a fit…You have significant experience writing for a digital or print publication covering everything sports fans care about—both on the field and off. You’ve established a unique voice in the sports genre, have a proven track record of growing digital audiences, and know how to create and discover trending stories.As someone who understands the digital news cycle, you can balance quick turnaround hits with longer reported features both as a writer and an editor. You work quickly and independently while being open to feedback and edits from top brass. Ideally, you have experience at an established newspaper or online platform in a sports vertical and have covered a variety of pro teams and leagues.
