The State Journal-Register in Springfield -- Illinois' capital city -- is seeking a top-notch journalist and thinker to be its next Editorial Engagement Editor. The Editorial Engagement Editor is responsible for curating a vibrant opinion/editorial section, both online and in print. He/she researches and writes editorials that are the voice of the paper's editorial board; recruits and selects guest columns on state/local issues; and selects letters to the editor. He/she also organizes and invites interest groups wishing to make policy presentations to the editorial board. During election season, he/she coordinates the paper's endorsement interview process. He/she must be able to engage politely and responsively with the public, and coordinate online engagement efforts that will drive web traffic to our editorials and opinion pieces.Illinois, with its myriad of state government problems, is possibly the best place in America to be an editorial page editor. The SJR originated and spearheaded the "Enough" campaign over Illinois' budget standoff -- we believe in taking bold stands when necessary. The ideal candidate must be a critical thinker without preconceived ideological biases. He/she must be a strong researcher, and a clear, direct and persuasive writer. Knowledge of state government issues is critical. At least five years' professional experience is required -- this is not an entry-level position.
