The Brookline Public Library is seeking a customer service oriented professional for the Library Assistant III (Reference) position. Under the general supervision of the Reference Supervisor, this position performs skilled administrative and public relations work relating to the provision of services and circulation; all other related work, as required.Essential Functions:The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.Public Services DutiesProvides information and borrower assistance to patrons. Assists patrons to find resources to fulfill their information needs using the online catalog, electronic databases, the Internet, and other resources. Provides readers’ advisory, and information services to library patrons, in person and on the telephone; answers questions regarding the library’s collection, policies and procedures; provides assistance to the public in using online catalogs and Internet access. Troubleshoots computer problems for staff and patrons, in person, by phone or electronically. Performs a variety of administrative and support assignments. May be called on to support the work of other departments. Performs similar or related work as required or as the situation dictates.Specialist DutiesAssignments may include public relations work, planning and scheduling library programs, providing specialized services or instructions to patrons, and collection maintenance. Oversees publication of the weekly library newsletter and stays in communication with local news outlets regarding library activities. Designs and arranges library displays; designs and posts signs at all town libraries. Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.Qualifications

Recommended Minimum QualificationsEducation and ExperienceHigh school diploma; three years of experience, including one year of library experience; experience working with the public preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Knowledge, Ability and SkillKnowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology. Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality services to library patrons. Ability to remain calm under pressure. Ability to tactfully enforce library behavioral standards. Ability to interact in an empathetic and non-judgmental manner with culturally diverse populations and persons experiencing a wide range of social conditions. Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks. Ability to effectively establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other staff. Ability to adapt to changing environments and receive constructive feedback. Ability to maintain current knowledge of computerized databases, information technology, and field of specialization. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated computer skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Good customer service skills and good oral and written communication skills in English.Full/Part Time
