Associate Editor

to our Cokesbury Kids team of dedicated children’s education professionals. This is a fully remote job opportunity and is a full-time, temporary position for a 1-year term.

Job PurposeThe

Associate Editor, Cokesbury Kids

manages—under the supervision of the Cokesbury Kids Director and in collaboration with the Cokesbury Kids team and contractors and vendors—the product planning, writing and/or manuscript acquisition, editorial development, and copyediting/production editing of Vacation Bible School/Cokesbury Kids resources to serve The United Methodist Church and other markets. This work includes planning and editing Vacation Bible School curriculum and other resources, including writing; collaborating with outside content providers (writers) for manuscripts; editing submissions for structure, completeness, uniqueness, coherence, and competence; and coordinating and completing all steps in the editorial workflow process for each assigned or acquired product (print and electronic), as well as hands-on copyediting/production editing and work with designers to achieve high-quality publications on schedule and on budget. The position requires expertise or ability to acquire expertise in selected computer programs, an ability to produce products on schedule, and strong knowledge of the church and Christian education/formation for children.

Essential FunctionsPlans and edits Vacation Bible School/Cokesbury Kids curriculum and other resources, including collaborating with outside content providers (writers and content developers) for manuscripts, music, video, and digital content; editing submissions for structure, completeness, uniqueness, coherence, and competence; and coordinating and completing all steps in the editorial workflow process for each assigned or acquired product (print and electronic) to achieve high-quality publications on schedule and on budget. Hands-on copyediting/production editing and work with Production & Design Manager to achieve high-quality publications on schedule and on budget. Manages and coordinates editorial stages of production for multiple publications from involvement at the writer’s conference stage through to the point of delivery of the approved final proof to the PrePress department. Ensures that multiple components in the curriculum series are coordinated at proof stages. Checks for accuracy of printed material and correct placement of illustrative material (which may include music) and inserts instructions and materials to accomplish completeness at the given stage. Copy edits and copy fits manuscripts traditionally and electronically as required to prepare projects for publication. Also works with music, video, and digital components. Develops and prepares detailed art descriptions/requests for Art Procurement and Photography to secure illustrative material and photographs. Photo edits available materials for content and age-level appropriateness. Reviews sketches and finished art for accuracy and adherence to written art descriptions. Researches content for factual accuracy and legal compliance, securing copyright permissions where applicable.

RequirementsA Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications and/or religion and at least two (2) years of experience with religious publishing, editorial work, or children’s religious curriculum. Training in religion or religious education is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExcellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to make presentations and lead workshops. Excellent personal computer skills, including intermediate proficiency with editing software (Adobe InDesign preferred). Knowledge of publishing with a strong proficiency in writing and editing. Knowledge and understanding of children and children’s programs, including educational theory and communications as required by assigned job duties. Knowledge of The United Methodist Church is preferred. Knowledge of markets served by The United Methodist Publishing House related to product appeal, utility, and sales is preferred. Current or previous participation in Christian education programs within a local congregation is preferred.
