Job Description

We have an opening for a UX/UI Web Designer to support the Web team in the Creative Services Division within the Technical Information Department (TID). You will become a trusted advisor to stakeholders throughout LLNL in creating overall website design goals and strategies, and a collaborative member of our Web Team.The selected candidate will be an exceptionally talented designer with complete understanding of design processes responsible for designing multiple websites for internal and external audiences, balancing input from stakeholders and programmatic requirements with user needs. You will regularly collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of communicators, designers, web administrators and developers to deliver quality communications products.The position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will:Collaborate and interact respectfully and effectively with all levels of administrative, management, scientific and technical staff and team members to plan new or revised websites, including considering the ideas of others and making recommendations to site structure and design development.Plan, guide and coordinate production decisions in all aspects of web design from concept through completion (schedule, design, review, prototype, QC). Adhere to Lab and departmental style guides as well as accessibility best practices.Work closely with content strategists and developers to understand, define, develop and establish objectives to form design requirements including suggesting site interactions, determining functionality, and creating page layouts that are responsive across desktop and mobile devices.Conduct user research and analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of web design and IA.With a keen eye for detail, design and redesign complex technical and possibly sensitive information into clear, direct and engaging web design appropriate to target audiences.Independently work to generate design for content management systems such as WordPress, Liferay and Drupal.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, establish timelines, coordinate with stakeholders and deliver products on time and to a high degree of quality. Work effectively with all levels of LLNL staff to meet Laboratory communication needs.Perform other tasks as assigned.In addition, at the .3 levelContribute to the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies and processes. Develop metrics and process improvement methods.Provide in-depth consultation and feedback related to the development of highly sensitive and complex projects that include design components. Evaluate progress of multiple concurrent projects; guide the work of others.Mentor team members on state of the practice and guide the work of others as needed. Effectively represent the Web Team and Creative Services in working groups or committees.Manage highly visible and the most complex projects establishing timelines, scope, and cost; liaison with customers and other functional areas.

QualificationsAbility to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.Bachelor’s degree in Web or Digital Design, Communication, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in technical and/or web design and communication.Experience collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, to meet organizational/programmatic objectives.Experience planning, developing, organizing and designing effective websites. Ability to design complex and/or technical subject matter.Intermediate knowledge in the use of design concepts and typography principles. Ability to communicate conceptual ideas.Intermediate knowledge of best practices for web, including user experience and information architecture (UX/IA). Understanding design’s role in digital accessibility. Knowledge of and experience with applying UI/UX principles to web designs.Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills to evaluate and incorporate relevant ideas from stakeholders and team members in both independent and multidisciplinary team collaboration.Ability to drive the success of the team in addition to your own success. Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills.Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud and Figma with content management systems (particularly Drupal, Liferay, and/or Wordpress).Experience designing and launching new websites and applying new technologies to websites. Familiarity with web accessibility standards, including W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Revised 508 Standards.Demonstrated self-starter, comfortable multi-tasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight schedules in a rapidly changing environment and attend to intense details with high consequence of error.In addition, at the .3 level:Experience leading and/or managing complex projects in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.Experience leading a team to establish UX strategies and processes to solve design problems. Propose design solutions in line with current UI trends. In-depth experience in applying UX principles to web front-end design, and experience using HTML, CSS, PHP, Bootstrap, and Adobe XD or Figma.Experience with creating and extending sites’ information architecture, navigational framework/structure and content design hierarchy. Understanding of emerging web and design technologies and knowledge of copyright and privacy regulations.Advanced knowledge of and experience with design methods and software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and Figma for digital production. Advanced technical knowledge of UX/UI design and development in a content management system, such as WordPress, Drupal, and/or LifeRay.

Qualifications we desire:Ability to understand and translate advanced or complicated scientific processes into easy-to-understand visual designs.Familiarity with programming languages such as HTML and CSS. In addition, familiarity with Bootstrap, Flexbox, and other grids for responsive web design.Experience creating user tests and conducting user design research; advanced knowledge of UI/UX principles.Ability to handle classified, unclassified, sensitive and confidential issues with tact, diplomacy and discretion.
