The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is an independent, non-profit, scientific research organization supported solely by the property and casualty insurers and reinsurers who conduct business or reinsure risks in the U.S.
The mission of IBHS is to break the cycle of human suffering that strikes families and communities in the wake of severe weather. As the impacts of climate change are yielding more extreme weather events, the need to improve our current and future infrastructure is evident. Through our continued research, our team of scientists and risk communicators deliver strategies that are geared towards improving modern building codes which lead to safer and stronger homes and businesses. IBHS’s real-world solutions enable the insurance industry and affected property owners to prevent avoidable losses.
IBHS is seeking a multiplatform content creator / producer to develop compelling stories highlighting our scientific research and company initiatives to foster greater resilience of our homes and businesses against severe weather. This position will be housed within our Product Design team and will work across the organization with the IBHS research, media, and policy teams. The successful candidate will generate compelling stories of our research and applied science, develop written products to serve our Membership and the public, provide A/V and studio support for broadcasts including live webinars, presentations, and podcasts. These productions should bring viewers into the perils of mother nature that include wind, wind-driven rain, hail, and wildfires, by highlighting IBHS research that studies their impact on our built environment. Content should also seek to share the people stories of those who have been impacted by disaster or who have benefited from education and mitigation strategies, such as those developed here at IBHS. The candidate should seek to engage a variety of audiences from members of the insurance industry to leaders in resiliency, and the public.
Potential candidates must demonstrate experience that can relate to one or more of these broad areas:
Informed interest in science and technology
Insurance industry knowledge and/or experience a plus
Technical editing and/or writing experience a plus
Ability to visualize abstract concepts and develop them into story ideas
Ability to work with diverse teams to develop multiuse and multiplatform content
Experience in a media production environment
Experience in science communications or production of related content
Experience in creating dynamic presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint and other design software
Experience in short-form storytelling for digital platforms, long-form storytelling experience a plus
Potential candidates must possess these core competencies:
Comprehension of scientific research and/or information and translate into accessible insights for a variety of audiences
Well-developed interpersonal skills to collaborate with teams from a diverse set of backgrounds & industries
Attention to detail and ability to review content with a discerning eye to maintain consistency across products
Understanding of social media platforms, engagement, and assist in creating content to serve audiences
Excellent communication skills across teams and in the media production space
Take initiative on projects and be resourceful to self-educate and engage across teams
Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements or current events
Ability to adapt and apply problem-solving skills
Excellent organizational and project-management skills
Qualifications:
B.S. or B.A. in Atmospheric Science or related field with broadcast and production experience preferred.
Or B.A. in Communications, Mass Communications, Journalism, Mass Media, Digital Media or B.F.A. with production and science and technology communication experience. Or any combination of relevant experience.
Experience in broadcast, communications, or related field a plus
Exhibit strong writing skills (broadcast and print styles, both a plus)
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, or other editing and design software a plus
Experience with content management systems a plus
