Appointment to begin August 2024.WHO WE AREThe College of Music, founded in 1920, is recognized as one of the top comprehensive music schools in the country. The College of Music offers seven degree programs in over 28 fields of study, at the bachelor’s level through the doctorate. Our dedicated and encouraging community of 550 degree-seeking students, 70 full-time faculty, 30 part-time faculty, and 30 professional, technical and administrative staff produces over 350 performances and numerous guest lectures, master-classes, and outreach events each year!In 2020, the College of Music celebrated its centenary with the opening of a new wing, which houses new rehearsal and performance spaces to accommodate Musicology’s World Music ensembles.The Musicology area of the University of Colorado Boulder, well regarded nationally and internationally, offers a BA Musicology – World Music degree; BM Musicology; and Ph.D. in Musicology with historical musicology and ethnomusicology concentrations. The dynamic faculty scholars, with research trajectories in both historical musicology and ethnomusicology, emphasize an integrated core of courses for all musicology students.The American Music Research Center is a joint venture between the College of Music and the University Libraries dedicated to discovering, sharing, and preserving American music of all kinds.The AMRC was founded in 1958 but was formerly opened ten years later on February 18, 1968, at the Dominican College in San Rafael, California, under the leadership of Sister Mary Dominic Ray. In 1989, Professor William Kearns, who would become the first director of the center at CU Boulder, arranged the transfer and organization of Sister Mary Dominic's remarkable collection from the Dominican College to the University of Colorado, Boulder. The next directors of this important research unit and gathering place were Thomas Riis and Susan Thomas whose work have positioned the center as a highly visible research center on American music in North America.The centerpiece of the AMRC is a celebrated repository of rare publications and manuscripts—housed in and curated by the Libraries—that includes significant resources in early American sacred music, the Silent Film Era, and the Swing Era, along with the region’s most important collection of manuscripts and other materials dedicated to Colorado and the American West. The Center produces a journal, sponsors lectures, symposia, concerts, and other events, and promotes scholarship into American Music through a variety of channels, including fellowships that bring scholars to campus to conduct research in our unique collections.WHAT YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BEWe seek an outstanding scholar of American music, broadly defined. Duties include teaching courses in historical musicology or ethnomusicology and directing the American Music Research Center (AMRC). The Director will serve as Editor-in-Chief of the center’s journal, Americas: A Hemispheric Music Journal published by the University of Nebraska Press, collaborate with University Libraries on acquisition and other collection matters related to the AMRC archival collections stewarded by the Libraries, coordinate the organization of AMRC festivals and events, actively work with the College of Music advancement team in AMRC fundraising, preside over the AMRC’s advisory board, supervise the AMRC staff assistant and student assistants, and provide a vision for continued growth. Teaching duties include three courses a year at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as student advising. The successful candidate will maintain an active publication record and a significant national and international presence, as well as participating in college, university, and professional service.WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position; possibility of entering with tenure).Appointment begins August 21, 2024.As part of the University of Colorado Boulder’s deep commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, the campus has implemented a reference check program with respect to final candidates for tenured faculty appointments.
