Photographer

to capture diverse photography assignments focusing on Lab research, scientists, staff, and infrastructure projects. This position will contribute compelling visuals aligned with the Lab’s mission and brand, supporting its visual communication needs within the Creative Services Team.What You Will Do:Photographer Level 2:Photography:Partner with LBNL scientific community and support staff in order to fulfill their photographic needs, including staff headshots and other portraits (studio and location photography), event coverage for scientific talks and meetings, and location photography for website articles, press releases, and other communication projects.Document the progress of infrastructure projects, and refresh buildings and other photographs of the lab campus.Maintain high standards of photographic quality, accuracy, and professionalism.Keep up to date on photography best practices and techniques.Image Archiving:Ensure all relevant information regarding photography projects is accurate and meets the standards set by the National Archives & Records Administration (NARA).Index and archive all images on the Lab’s on and offline indexing system and the online image archive (Bynder WebDAM).Assist the Lead Photographer in maintaining and improving the Lab’s historical image archives.Retrieve archived images from both the online and physical film archives and digitally input film images if required.Perform metadata audits and work with staff to improve caption and other descriptive metadata gathering.Keep accurate and complete records of time spent on projects.In addition to the above, Photographer Level 3:Photography:Provide creative and technical guidance on lighting setups for advanced shoots, both in-studio and on location.Independently manage full-scale photography projects from conception to completion, ensuring high-quality output.Collaborate with other departments to develop visual strategies that align with the Lab’s communication goals.Image Archiving:Oversee the organization and maintenance of digital and physical archives.Implement advanced metadata management and ensure all photographic content meets archival standards.Implement digitization projects and manage the retrieval of historical images for Lab publications and communications.Develop and implement processes for improving image retrieval and archival practices.What is Required:Photographer Level 2:A degree in Journalism (with an emphasis on photojournalism), Multimedia Studies, Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design, or related fields, or at least two years experience working as a professional photographer and a portfolio of published work; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.Knowledge of professional camera systems (DSLR and/or Mirrorless - Nikon) and familiarity with industry practices, and equipment.A strong photography portfolio demonstrating a breadth of subject matter that shows a deep understanding of visual communication.Solid experience working with the Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge, Digital Asset Management Software and systems (WebDam by Bynder or similar platforms), and project management concepts and software.Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to work with little direct supervision, prioritize assignments, and manage schedules.In addition to the above, Photographer Level 3:A degree in Journalism (with an emphasis on photojournalism), Multimedia Studies, Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design, or related fields, or equivalent four years professional work experience, and a portfolio of published work. The individual should also have a proven track record of leading complex photography projects and mentoring other photographers.Advanced knowledge of professional camera systems (DSLR and/or Mirrorless - Nikon) and familiarity with industry practices, and equipment.Solid understanding and experience in location and studio lighting.Desired Qualifications:Photographer Level 2:Solid understanding and experience in location and studio lighting.Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of professional people, including scientists and administrators.The ability to troubleshoot and solve problems (difficult lighting, very tight spaces) while maintaining a high level of professionalism and situational awareness.Experience working in academic and/or scientific environments.In addition to the above, Photographer Level 3:Full knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge, Digital Asset Management Software and systems (WebDam by Bynder or similar platforms), and full knowledge of current techniques and cross-platform environments, including advanced color management and multimedia production.Strong ability to edit and enhance photographic files creatively and technically.Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of personnel and other contracts.Notes:This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.The hourly range for the Photographer Level 2 is $29.66-$42.97.The hourly range for the Photographer Level 3 is $34.07- $49.39.This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
