Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, an Am Law 50 law firm, is seeking a Communications Manager to join the Business Development and Marketing team.

This position can be based in any of the following U.S. offices: Century City, Downtown Los Angeles, Orange County, Del Mar, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, New York, or Washington DC. There is only one opening.

*This position has a remote/hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation to be in the office on an as needed basis.The Communications Manager will manage and execute external and internal communications initiatives, with a focus on media relations and PR activities. The Communications Manager will partner with the broader Communications Team in the development and execution of public relations programs and initiatives that support strategic firm industry sectors to raise the firm’s profile, improve brand awareness and enhance client engagement. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience working collaboratively with individuals at all levels of a matrixed organization, effectively working with the press, outside PR agencies and vendors to manage results-driven media relations campaigns. This position will report to the Senior Communications Manager.Responsibilities:Execute media relations and PR strategies, campaigns and initiatives to support the firm’s strategic industry sectors.Proactively identify, secure, review and evaluate media opportunities for the firm’s attorneys with regional and national business and trade press outlets; conduct media training and develop talking points.Ensure consistency with the firm brand and writing guidelines in all materials and messages.Develop content to support communications and marketing efforts, including deal announcements, press releases, awards entries, write-ups for the firm website and intranet, among other content.Work with outside PR agency to facilitate and evaluate new media interviews.Build and/or strengthen key reporter relationships, staying current on relevant news outlets, reporters, and their areas of focus.Review, proofread and write content for press releases, media pitches, talking points, articles, the firm's website, internal newsletters, directory/award submissions.Assist in the preparation of spokespeople and leaders for interviews or meetings with the press by preparing talking points or briefing documents and conducting media training for spokespeople when required.Support select directory, accolade and survey responses.Proactively identify thought leadership content and social media campaign strategies to further elevate the firm, lawyers and practice and industry teams.Proactively contribute to broader PR and communications plans for specific projects, events, and thought leadership initiatives as needed.Monitor, analyze and report on PR campaigns and their impact.Other administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Functions of Job:Execute media relations strategies that support the firm’s strategic industry sectors.Work with outside PR agencies to facilitate and evaluate new media interviews.Draft press releases, media pitches, media briefing documents, and other content for the firm's website, internal newsletters, directory/award submissions.Work with the Communications Team to assist in media outreach.

Qualifications and ExperienceRequired Qualifications:5+ years relevant experience in a communications role at a law firm, public relations/communications agency, or other professional service environment (e.g., private equity firm, consulting firm) with demonstrated experience in PR/media relations.Knowledge of the legal industry and its key drivers, challenges, and opportunities is highly advantageous.Meticulous attention to detail and strong organization and project management skills.Ability to conceptualize, think critically, be resourceful, work independently, and as part of a team with the ability to build credibility and develop internal and external relationships.Ability to prioritize and see projects through to completion in an environment where priorities change quickly.Strong writing and editing skills and familiarity with AP Style.Strong interpersonal skills and proactive attitude.Thorough understanding of confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:Experience in supporting specific industry sectors or at a professional services organization.Familiarity with legal rankings and award nominations (Chambers, Legal 500, etc.).

Computer/Software KnowledgeRequired:

Strong computer skills with proficiency with Microsoft Suite.Preferred:

Knowledge using press/media database (Cision, Roxhill, etc.), document management systems, Zoom, Microsoft Teams.

Work EnvironmentA fun, supportive, transparent and fast-paced environment.You will be based in one of our local Sheppard Mullin offices but will be allowed to work from home.You are required to come into the office on an as-needed basis.Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.California: The salary range for this position is $145,000 to $170,000 per year.New York: The pay range for this position is: $145,000 - $170,000 per year.
