This position is responsible for helping to execute strategic media relations priorities in order to promote and elevate the University of Denver as a premier research institution and increase overall knowledge of the University. This position is responsible for cultivating local media and working with the Director of Media Relations to provide ongoing coordination with all departments across campus.Essential FunctionsInterface with media outlets, manage requests and proactively pitch stories.Establish and maintain relationships with journalists locally.Work closely with Director of Media Relations to provide support to DU faculty, staff, and students on media relations matters and provide media training.Work closely with the Director of Media Relations to set and achieve goals for media relations.Write media advisories, releases, and pitches.Maintain media databases and lists.Compile media reports and disseminate data.Work closely with the Director of Media Relations to maintain a comprehensive Faculty Experts list.Work with others in MarComm and across campus to ensure that DU’s best news is leveraged for media opportunities.Monitor current issues and identify trends/opportunities in the media.Work some evenings and weekends and be on-call.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to develop and deliver news on deadline.Knowledge of web-based journalism principles and techniques.Experience working in the higher education field is a plus.Extremely creative self-starter with strong work ethic, team orientation, and commitment to quality.Proactive ability to effectively set priorities, achieve goals, and measure results.Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree or higher in journalism or related field.5 years’ experience in a deadline-oriented newsroom or media field, preferably as a news writer or publicist.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree or relevant work experience in journalism or related field.More than 5 years’ experience in a deadline-oriented newsroom or media field, preferably as a news writer or publicist.Work ScheduleMonday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work some evenings and weekends and be on-call.In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Salary Range:The salary range for this position is $68,000 ‐ $75,000.The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
