Public Safety Communications Supervisor position.An OverviewA Public Safety Communications Supervisor performs advanced level, technical and operational work in staffing an urbanE-911 call center on an assigned shift. The work requires evaluating daily reports and shift workloads, assigning, and evaluating staff and maintaining proper staffing levels, organizing, and scheduling quality assurance activities, operating, and maintaining duty-related equipment, providing policy and budget recommendations, and ensuring staff certifications and re-certifications are up to date. Public Safety Communications Supervisors must be available on workdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should have comprehensive knowledge of E-911 call center technology and certifications for public safety call-taking and dispatching; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City; thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, laws and regulations pertaining to public safety communications, and the ability to apply them; thorough knowledge and ability to efficiently operate Computer-Aided Dispatch software, digital communications, telephone, radio and related equipment to perform all public safety communications duties; good working knowledge of lead worker principles and practices; ability to obtain and utilize thorough knowledge of the Department of Emergency Communications administrative, operational and/or maintenance functions and ability to troubleshoot operations equipment when necessary; ability to exercise tact and sound judgment; ability to speak clearly and distinctly; ability to establish and maintain good working relationship with others that reflect a positive image of the Department and City.The OpportunityLeads a shift of Public Safety Communications Officers staff by scheduling and assigning work and evaluating staff work performance.Ensures adequate staffing.Organizes, directs, and monitors daily workload and performance of assigned shift.Assists with completing and approving performance evaluations for Public Safety Communications Officers by utilizing Microsoft office applications.Ensures all training requirements are obtained by staff.Ensures accurate time and employee attendance to staff on an assigned shift.Assists in the recruitment selection process conduct applicant interviews, and trains employees.Works closely with training staff to ensure all staff certifications are up to date.Maintains working knowledge of department Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).Performs related work, as required.About the DepartmentThe Department of Emergency and Customer Communications (DECC) ensures the effective delivery of routine and emergency calls for service to the City of Alexandria public safety departments. Minimum: High School Diploma or GED; and two years of experience and Certifications at the level of a Public Safety Communications Officer III or achieve Public Safety Communications Officer lll certifications within six months from hire date, experience with spreadsheet tracking and payroll system expertise, or any combination of experience as a Public Safety Communications Officer and training in 911 call taking and dispatching disciplines which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Additional Requirements: Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word application; A performance rating of Satisfactory or above on all performance factors for the past two evaluation periods; Completion of Department training as both Emergency Medical/Fire and Police dispatcher (dual discipline); Completion of Power phone training for EMD, Fire and Law Enforcement; National Incident Management System (NIMS) Course 100, 200, 300, 400 and 700 Level; APCO's Registered Professional Leadership (RPL) Course within 1 year of appointment; Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Operator Level A; Communications Training Officer (CTO); and ability to access and analyze employee performance based upon available software programs (i.e., phone statistics, quality assurance reviews, monitoring of calls and dispatch functions of employees) and mentoring of employees for both performance and promotional opportunities and growth within the department.This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment checks and medical testing including but not limited to a criminal history records check, fingerprinting, drug screening, vision and hearing exam, psychological and polygraph testing, as well as position-specific competency and aptitude screening.

This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to report to work regardless of the emergency (i.e., weather, transportation, or other disasters).
