The Sharon at SouthPark is a continuing care retirement community for senior residents located near the heart of SouthPark. We are a non-profit long term care facility that offers independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care. At the Sharon at SouthPark our team member's number one responsibility is to deliver compassionate resident care every time!ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAssists and supports the Vitality and Well-being Department with the planning and implementation of a multi-dimensional wellness program. This includes, but is not limited to, offerings and opportunities that meet the emotional, environmental, intellectual, musical, nutritional, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational, needs, wants, and goals of the residents.Programs and leads general music programs and music therapy treatment sessions as directed by the RM. Assists with the planning, scheduling, and implementation of the general music programming and 1:1 interventions for assigned area(s), based on the residents' individualized needs as identified in each residents' care plan.Assists in community outings under the direction of the Licensed Recreation Therapist as assigned by the RM; is responsible to be familiar with community outing policies and procedures within the Vitality and Well-being Department.Plans and organizes general therapeutic music activities and programs in accordance with residents' needs, capabilities, and interests.Leads and participates in instrumental and vocal music activities designed to meet residents' needs, capabilities, and interests in a group or 1:1 setting.Participates in the development and coordination of the Music Therapy treatment program as part of the interdisciplinary treatment team.Responsible for responding to interdisciplinary referrals for treatment based Music Therapy interventions when identified for a resident. Will implement treatment sessions and evaluate efficacy and effectiveness of treatment interventions in relation to resident progress.Maintains an appropriate and functional music library, and necessary musical equipment, and supplies.Reports to the RM on residents' responses and/or progress to specific approaches utilized.Documentation to include group attendance records, recreation flow sheets, hydration intake recording at social events, 1:1 music intervention response records, and any treatment referrals for Music Therapy to include assessment, care plan development and related progress notes.Knowledgeable of and responsible for following departmental Program Protocols developed for Sharon Towers for group or individual interventions within Healthcare and Assisted Living. Participates in the development of Music Therapy Program Protocols for group interventions. Ensures appropriate guidelines are being followed for specific protocols when delivering services.Encourages recreation participation with residents and assists them as needed to/from music therapy and general recreation programs and communicates with nursing personnel for purpose of assistance in transporting residents to and from general activity areas.Responsible for providing independent leisure materials, related to musical preferences, identified on a resident's care plan or by resident request.Assist with ensuring recreational supplies are available for evening and weekend groups lead by volunteers or nursing.Assist with supervision of volunteers, who function within the Recreational Therapy portion of the Vitality and Well-being Department.Responsible for program coordination and supervision of Music Therapy students in a practicum or internship program capacity.Assist with copying and distribution of small monthly recreation calendars to resident rooms, and hanging of the large recreation calendars in HC.AL.Assist with mail distribution of HC and AL resident mail as assigned each week.Responsible for general housekeeping duties in activity areas. Returns shared areas such as dining room and sun porches back to original condition at the conclusion of each activity in that area: i.e., rearranges furniture that may have been moved, removes refuse from group, picks up litter from floor, returns equipment and/or other supplies to appropriate storage areas, assists residents in transport to other areas of building, etc.Responsible for regular cleaning of music supplies, instruments and equipment per cleaning schedule.Ensures all music and recreational equipment and supplies are in a clean working order; reports any damaged items to the RM.Assists with maintaining an ongoing inventory of departmental supplies and equipment maintenance and reports any needs to RM.Attends in-service training and continuing education workshops as directed by the RM or Director of Vitality and Well-being.Is aware of residents' physical and dietary limitations. Adheres to these limitations consistent with Residents Rights.Remains on the alert for conditions that may interfere with the safety and well being of residents, especially during recreational pursuits. Corrects and/or reports hazardous conditions to appropriate staff in a timely manner.Understands and closely follows all aspects of infection control policies and procedures.Comply with Federal and state regulations; and national certification (CMBT-
Certification Board for Music Therapists)
standards for credentials, as well as Professional Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.Responsible for maintaining and keep required certifications up to date.Follows the appropriate chain of command.Adheres to the defined policy for the Bill of Rights for Nursing Home Residents.Keeps professional matters confidential.Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed by the RM and/or Director of Vitality and Well-being to support community wide objectives.
QUALIFICATIONSMust possess a high level of flexibility and tolerance to adjust to changes in workloads, assignments, hours and days (i.e. holidays, evenings, and weekends).Must have a basic understanding of the needs of the ill elderly and must have an empathetic approach to illness.A knowledge of musical theory, and music instruction methods, and principles and practices of music therapy preferred.Must have a willingness and an aptitude for working with a variety of people.Must have a basic knowledge of a variety of recreational and music activities.A knowledge of various appropriate music therapy activities used for therapeutic treatment preferred.Must exhibit the ability to give instruction to others and to lead.Imagination and creativity preferred.Must exhibit a spirit of cooperation.Must possess a valid driver's license.EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEA four year degree from an accredited Music Therapy program required. 1-2 years of experience working with the dementia population / LTC experience preferred. Ability to play an instrument and possess other musical talents required.
