SUMMARY

The Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) provides group and individual music therapy services for residents throughout Sholom. The Music Therapist will receive referrals from Recreation Therapists, spiritual care, nursing and/or social work.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Plan, organize and direct music therapy services.* Provide individual music therapy sessions to residents/tenants in accordance with plan of care or referrals from therapeutic recreation co-workers, spiritual care, nursing and/or social work.* Provide group music therapy sessions which meet the physical, emotional, cognitive, or social needs of residents/tenants and enhance their quality of life.* Use music therapy to manage stress, alleviate pain, assist in the expression of feelings, enhance memory, improve communication and promote physical rehabilitation.* Participate in and initiate new programs in response to resident needs.* Provide music for occupational and physical therapy as appropriate

* Collaborate with other staff in planning music activities in accordance with residents'/tenants' physical or psychological needs, capabilities, and interests.* Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to assess and address resident/tenant needs in a consistent cross-disciplinary manner.* Update nursing staff about significant observations/concerns.* Educate staff on appropriate use of music in long term care and assisted living as requested.* Attend long term residents' care conferences, as needed.

* Create and maintain a variety of documents, records and reports including:* Complete music therapy assessment for individual residents/tenants referred, create music therapy care plan based on assessment as appropriate.* Complete reports regarding the development, modification and implementation of treatment plans including participant's progress when needed.

* Demonstrate knowledge of music therapy research and use best practices in clinical interventions.* Maintain music skills including singing, voice, guitar and piano proficiency, percussion, improvisation, composition and creativity.* Possess knowledge of various musical genres and styles.* Follow standards of practice per American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).

* Perform miscellaneous projects and complete various tasks as requested by management.* Able to play musical instrument, such as piano or guitar.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Certifications

* Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy is required.* Master's degree in Music Therapy preferred.* Certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) as a Music Therapist (MT-BC) required. Maintain board certification

and comply with continuing music therapy education requirements.* One or more years of experience in providing hands on music therapy is required, preferably in a healthcare setting.* CPR Certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of therapeutic techniques using music, such as but not limited to: song writing, lyric analysis, social story songs, using rhythm to stimulate movement to meet therapeutic objectives.* Able to teach others either to play an instrument or sing.* Able to play a musical instrument such piano or guitar.* Demonstrate knowledge of music therapy research and use best practices in clinical interventions.* Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a variety of people and personalities inside and outside the organization. Able to effectively handle interactions at all levels and to respond appropriately in sensitive situations.* Able to display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals both internal and external to the organization in accordance with our PROUD standards.* Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to all levels of people inside and outside the organization, including possessing good English speaking skills, fluency and understandability.* Detail-oriented, organized and applies effective time management skills in order to meet all deadlines. Able to successfully

prioritize and manage multiple tasks and numerous projects in a fast-paced environment.* Work as an effective and proactive team-player; understands the importance of supporting the organization, residents, customers and other Sholom employees.* Displays flexibility to meet organization's unique needs and to be productive in an environment with regular interruptions.* Able to understand the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemicals used in cleaning. Keep chemicals and cleaning supplies safely stored.* Understand and maintain confidential nature of organization and client information, including and in accordance to HIPAA regulations.* Able to follow and adhere to Universal Precautions and Infection Control procedures related to Nursing.* Able to understand and follow facility and department safety and emergency procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB

Incumbent must be able to:

* Perform light work, lifting up to 20 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.* Push and move wheelchairs with residents of all weights and sizes for short and long distances.* Twist, turn, bend, stoop, squat, and reach frequently in the performance of music therapy activities including setting up instruments, assisting with activities and transporting residents.* Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to all levels of people inside and outside the organization, including possessing good English speaking skills, fluency and understandability.* Apply manual dexterity, visual acuity and ability, for computer keyboarding, office equipment use, performance of musical and recreational activities, review detailed reports, information, fine print and warning labels.* Physical ability to move around, stand and walk throughout buildings repeatedly throughout the day in performance of music therapy activities.* Able to work a flexible work schedule, including overtime, nights and weekends as required including attending events/meetings as needed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Incumbent must be able to use telephone, calculator, copy machines, computers and other office equipment. Also able to use/play

a variety of musical equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is indoors. The incumbent must be flexible about switching positions quickly in order to respond to the needs

of residents, in responding to emergencies.
