Position Title:

Music Director, Part Time

Reports to:

Board of Directors, Sunday Service & Music Team

FLSA Status:

Non-exempt, hourly, no benefits.

Compensation:

$22.70 per hour ($3,632/year).

Hours:

16 hours/month; August - May (Program year)

Starting Date:

August 2024

SUMMARY:

The Music Director is responsible for planning and providing music

two Sundays a month . They will lead (and rehearse) the choir and provide accompaniment for these services. Choir practice usually takes place before service begins. Services take place 10 AM - 11:30 AM.

Exact weekly hours will vary depending on programming and are flexible, but the Music Director will work 16 hours each month in order to plan and provide music for the two scheduled Sundays for a total of 160 hours/year. There is a small budget for additional musicians and a substitute accompanist, if needed.

Candidates should have experience in performing live music, working with a choir, and an ability to work collaboratively. We have a large UU musical library available to select music from, and the Music Director will coordinate with the minister, Sunday Service & Music Team, and presenters in order to choose music. Extensive knowledge of Unitarian Universalism is not required at the time of hire, but a willingness to develop an understanding of UU values and music is expected. PURPOSE:

Along with the Sunday Services Committee, the Music Director exercises an important ministry that reaches out to the staff, choir members, the congregation, and the community. The Music Director agrees to recognize and facilitate the pastoral dimension of this program.

The Music Director works with the choir, other staff members, committees, and members of the congregation to exemplify the spirit of this place. As an educator, the Music Director will teach music and explain necessary musical and liturgical concepts. As a musician, they will work with others to provide and enable the highest quality of service music possible for the fellowship.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directs choir rehearsals and performances.

Plays piano (or other instrument).

Chooses choir anthems and congregational hymns.

Maintains the fellowship’s music library and musical instruments.

Attends monthly meeting of the Sunday Service & Music Team.

Coordinates service music with other worship leaders (i.e. Sunday services committee, minister, or guest ministers).

Maintains contact with music colleagues in other churches and with the wider denomination through involvement in the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Degree in music or significant experience in performing and facilitating live music.

Ability to lead rehearsals and direct a choir.

Ability to coordinate musicians who can accompany choir, ensembles, and congregation.

Good communication, relationship, and leadership skills.

Organizational abilities.

The ability to work with other committees.

Ability to play piano or other instrument to provide accompaniment.
