The National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP) is seeking a Senior Director of Communications to join the organization’s senior management team and work closely with senior staff to define, communicate, and promote NASHP’s leadership role in state health policy.Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all communications, website, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate NASHP’s mission. The Senior Director of Communications will ensure that NASHP is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within our network and constituent base.This is a full-time position, based in NASHP’s Washington, DC or Portland, Maine office.Core Competencies and Requirements

15 years of experience in communications, preferably in a leadership role within a dynamic non-profit organizationExperience covering areas such as brand promotion and marketing, research dissemination, state policy, media relations, website and social media content, publications, and newslettersKnowledge of policymaking and how to function in a nonpartisan environment is essential.The ability to take research and transform it into engaging and useful content and disseminate it to core audiences through multiple distribution channels is criticalStrategic thinker to help create a plan to more fully reach our audiences of state leaders, federal policymakers, funders, media, academia, and national organizations.Highly collaborative style with substantial experience in developing and implementing communications strategiesExcellent relationships with elite national and state media and a proven track record of crafting communications to garner coverageKnowledge of and passion for health policy and the ways it is created and implemented in the states.Superior writing/editing and verbal communication skillsA strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrentlyRelationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levelsSincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, funders, policymakers, researchers, health and health care organizations, and other partnersSelf-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiativesPrimary Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include:Develop, implement, and evaluate NASHP’s annual communications plan in conjunction with NASHP’s overall strategic plan.Raise NASHP’s profile with state and national health decision makers and funders, increasing the organization’s reach to these core audiences.Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate.Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities.Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, research, newsletters, and NASHP’s website.Mentor and lead a team responsible for NASHP’s external footprint (e.g., website, social media, and press) and internal processes (e.g., publications).Track and measure the level of engagement within NASHP’s constituency over timeOversee the work of freelance writers/editors, graphic designers, and printersWorking at NASHP

NASHP offers a flexible work schedule. We are currently operating in a hybrid work arrangement, with two days in the office each week. We have offices in both Washington, DC and Portland, Maine.Salary and Compensation

The salary range for this role is $145,000 – $187,000.
