Job Description

The magazine is seeking a staff designer to join our award-winning design team.

The designer will work with art directors, editors, and photo editors to conceptualize and package stories for all sections of the magazine. You are adept at creating compelling and cohesive print and digital presentations. You should also have expertise in commissioning art from a roster of talented artists and illustrators of all backgrounds.

You will have excellent typography and composition skills, the ability to think conceptually, and be adept at organizing complex content into engaging narratives.

Responsibilities:

Design forthcoming feature articles, columns and special projects for both print and digital platforms.

Design on and off-platform promotions for stories.

Commission illustrations for features, special projects and columns.

Create cohesive designs for special projects that work in print and online.

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

2-7 years of design experience.

A strong portfolio that shows command of typographic voice, layout and color.

Familiarity with Figma and Adobe Indesign.

Preferred Qualifications:

Comfort working independently and collaborating with colleagues of different backgrounds.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Flexibility to adapt to changes under tight deadlines.

Experience commissioning illustration is a plus.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.62 and $112,000.00.
