Position SummaryVillage Church seeks a qualified and committed pianist-singer for weekly Sunday 9 AM worship services in Wellesley between September and mid-June. Vocal leadership is expected as part of congregational hymn singing. Responsibilities include preparing and presenting musical offerings for services, leading congregational hymn singing from the piano, and collaborating with lay musicians, as needed.
The position requires 2 hours per week onsite, between 8:00-10:00 AM on Sundays, with regular accessibility and communication during the week for elements of worship planning.
Responsibilities
Serve as pianist and vocalist for 9 AM worship services on Sundays, September through mid-June, providing for all musical elements of the service, including but not limited to preludes, congregational hymns, liturgical responses, solos/anthems, and postludes.
Weekly presence between 8:15-10:00 AM on Sundays to meet with pastors and hold occasional rehearsals, in addition to leading music in the 9 AM worship service.
Provide vocal leadership for hymns and liturgical responses.
Collaborate with lay musicians in worship services, as required.
Provide music for special services in the liturgical year as requested/available (Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Christmas Eve, etc.)
Participate in regular planning meetings to design liturgically-informed worship services that incorporate a variety of musical styles, working directly with and supporting the pastoral staff.
The Chapel Worship Lead Musician reports to the Director of Music, Village Church in Wellesley.
Qualifications
Strong keyboard and sight-reading skills to lead 4-part congregational hymns, including the ability to play from lead sheets and accompany instrumental solos.
Strong vocal skills to lead congregation in hymn-singing and present occasional vocal solos.
Versatile musicianship spanning classical and modern genres including but not limited to praise and worship, Christian popular music, jazz, gospel, and world music.
Experience collaborating with and leading lay musicians and ensembles.
Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for meaningful collaboration with the pastors and music staff of Village Church Wellesley & Weston.
Compensation$200 per worship service, which includes occasional pre-service rehearsals.
The stated compensation amounts are gross amounts that are subject to all local, state, federal, and any other taxes and deductions as described by law.
