Position Title : Director of Children’s Music

Job Classification : Part-time/hourly; estimated 8 hours weekly

Ministry Description : To serve as leader and coordinator for the children’s music program, engaging children and families in faith and the life of our church through music. Actively coordinate and direct the children’s music program for preschool through grade 6.

Regular Duties

Coordinate program and singing schedules with the Director of Music.

Be a presence in the church life of the children of our congregation.

Schedule and be present for children’s music rehearsals.

Develop and share rehearsal and performance schedule with families and staff.

Recruit, train and retain volunteers for the children’s music ministry.

Monthly presentation of song to congregation by children's choir.

Proactively explore creative ways to allow the children to participate in worship and community activities.

Visit with children and their families.

Occasional Duties

Assist with holiday music services, including Christmas Eve services.

Organize special opportunities for the participation of children in worship through music and/or drama.

Working Relationships

Internal:

Reports directly to: Director of Music Ministries.

May have regular contact within the family church:

Children (preschool through grade 6).

Visitation and pastoral care.

Families of children- visitation and pastoral care.

Adult members- serving as activity coordinators and choir aids.

May have regular contact with the following co-workers & peers:

Director of Music Ministries.

Pastor and Office staff- obtaining administrative support & scheduling.

Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries- planning & scheduling family events.

Nursery staff- planning family events.

May have regular contact with the following church committees:

Finance Committee- manage children’s music budget.

Worship Committee- planning role of children in worship services.

Education Committee- planning and implementation of educational programs for children.

Human Resources- address personal needs.

External:

May have regular contact with the following outside the church family:

Local schools.

Other churches.

Community organizations.

UM Conference.

Skills, Experience & Educational Background:

Skills:

A strong faith in God to share and ability to share it.

Good Christian example.

Commitment to the church.

Ability to lead choir rehearsals at the piano.

Dynamic, enthusiastic about being with children.

Knowledgeable in child development.

An open mind and willingness to risk and learn.

Be highly organized and have the ability to plan and work ahead.

The ability to communicate well and work with others in a precise manner.

Understanding of the beliefs of the United Methodist Church.

Must be able to work as a part of a team.

Ability to motivate and organize others.

Awareness of special needs children.

Experience:

2-5 years working with children.

Experience directing/accompanying choirs.

Education:

Associates or 4-year degree in children’s music desirable or commensurate experience.

Job Type : Part-time

Expected hours : No more than 8 per week
