Each year, our Foundation, employees and financial representatives donate time, talent and financial support to causes they're passionate about.What's the roleThe Assistant Director, Strategic Communications, Sustainability and Social Impact, will play a pivotal role in supporting Northwestern Mutual's social impact efforts through effective business and internal communications. This person will collaborate across matrixed teams to raise awareness, promote understanding, and engage internal stakeholders in Northwestern Mutual's Culture of Belonging and Diversity and Inclusion efforts and Financial Access and Sustained Action for Racial Equity programming. They will also ensure alignment with the company’s overall Sustainability and Social Impact communications strategy and narrative.This position will be based in Milwaukee, WI and requires a strategic and creative professional with 10+ years of agency and/or corporate communications experience who is dedicated to driving positive change through purpose-driven internal communications and engaging storytelling.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesCommunications strategy: Develop and implement comprehensive Diversity and Inclusion and Financial Access communications strategies to reach Northwestern Mutual corporate office employees and Northwestern Mutual financial advisors and representatives – working with integrated marketing and PR teams to align campaigns across internal and external audience segments.

Messaging and Enterprise Storytelling: Craft compelling narratives for internal audiences that showcase the organization's commitment to Sustainability and Social Impact, including success stories, employee profiles, program announcements, and more. Lead the development of comprehensive messaging libraries tailored for different target audiences. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business partners, strategic communications, and marketing, to ensure consistent messaging and alignment of Diversity and Inclusion and Financial Access initiatives.

Internal Events and Employee Experience: Lead promotional communications and develop leader scripts/talking points and other strategic communications needs for large-scale internal social impact events, such as the annual Women's Summit, Multicultural Affinity Summit, and others.

Sustainability and Social Impact Reporting and Evergreen Content: Manage all Diversity and Inclusion and Financial Access messaging and proof points across the Sustainability and Social Impact narrative; support those areas as an advisor to the annual Sustainability and Social Impact report and content package. Lead evergreen communication strategies that educate, engage, and inspire talent, employees and field representatives.

Reputation and issues management: Contribute to reputation management and issues-related efforts as the Diversity and Inclusion and Financial Access communications subject-matter expert. Monitor and analyze Diversity and Inclusion trends, news, and public perception to identify opportunities and challenges for reputation-based communications.

Measurement and reporting: Measure and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of communications initiatives, providing regular reports and updates to leadership and stakeholders.

Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

Minimum 10 years of experience in strategic communications in agency and/or corporate communications setting, preferably with a focus on employee communications, sustainability and social impact, corporate social responsibility and/or Diversity and Inclusion.

Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing comprehensive internal communications strategies aligned with organizational goals.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including exceptional writing and storytelling abilities.

Proven experience in engaging and influencing stakeholders at various levels and across diverse audiences.

Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Understanding of diversity and inclusion and sustainability and social impact communications trends and best practices.

Proficiency in managing multiple priorities and delivering high-quality results within deadlines.

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
