The Senior Director, Marketing Technology is part of the Communications and Marketing team at Vanderbilt University. The Senior Director of Marketing Technology will be a key leader responsible for driving growth through marketing technology, website solutions, reporting, and analytics. This role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities that ensure the university's digital presence is innovative, cohesive, and data-driven. This role will optimize current technology investments and integrate new applications that will bolster the communications and marketing team's efficacy across different audiences, functions, and tools.

The Senior Director of Marketing Technology is pivotal in aligning marketing strategies with technological solutions. This individual bridges the gap between marketing and IT, ensuring that marketing teams leverage the best tools and technologies available.

Reporting directly to senior leadership in the Division of Communications and Marketing, this position has supervisory responsibility for the following functions: website development, UI/UX, digital content strategy, email marketing, and digital marketing functions including SEO/SEM, data analytics, and marketing automation. This role also does require the ability to report to work in-person on the Vanderbilt University campus

The Communications and Marketing team at Vanderbilt is a dynamic and deeply collaborative group. The division, with all of its departments and sub-teams, serves as the institution-wide center of excellence for communications and marketing, developing and executing strategies that inform, engage and inspire others to participate in Vanderbilt University’s global academic and research mission. The division is a key strategic adviser and partner for other divisions in the university, providing comprehensive plans and thoughtful analysis on messaging opportunities and constraints. The Communications and Marketing team continuously seeks innovative solutions to new and emerging challenges in order to deliver results at scale to advance the larger mission, values and priorities of the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

Team Leadership:

Create and implement a comprehensive website and email strategy, both short and long-term, that articulates a clear and compelling vision for our digital platforms, enhances the internal user experience, grows external user engagement, and modernizes our capabilities and in-house talent.

Advance the maturity of marketing platforms and tools, including CRM, CMS, email marketing systems, and analytics tools to deliver on the strategic goals for Marketing Technology and the University.

Cultivate and lead a collaborative relationship with IT to ensure proper exploration, implementation, development, and maintenance of supporting marketing technologies.

Develop, track, and execute a product roadmap for evolving the website, CMS, and related tools.

Develop and implement a roadmap for website migration.

Build relationships with key stakeholders across the university to foster productive relationships, improve communication, and inform the development of systems and resources.

Lead and manage the marketing technology team, including web developers, CRM specialists, email marketing team, and marketing automation experts.

Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment, promoting professional growth.

Develop hands-on expertise in the systems and tools to manage the people and work with precision and expertise.

Campaign Optimization and Operational Excellence:

Support the execution of digital marketing campaigns by building and maintaining a robust and flexible technological infrastructure.

Guide the design and implementation of email campaigns using marketing automation platforms.

Monitor and optimize marketing technology performance to improve campaign outcomes.

Boost website traffic and user engagement through effective SEO strategies.

Manage the marketing technology budget, ensuring cost-effective investments in tools and platforms.

Develop and implement a strategy for utilizing vendors to enhance scalability.

Build effective relationships with technology vendors and service providers.

Implement best practices within the team that produce tangible improvements in efficiency and service delivery.

Ensure consistent and effective use of divisional project management tools by the Marketing Technology team.

Oversee the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of marketing data to inform strategy and decision-making.

Ensure data accuracy and integrity, complying with data privacy regulations.

Manage the CRM and email marketing data to ensure effective and personalized communication.

Lead the development of documentation and resources to aid in the effective use of marketing tools, with a focus on enablement for the website, email marketing and automation platforms.

Implement a strategy to grow the use of training materials and customer satisfaction with the website platform.

Adhere to confidentiality and business ethics; demonstrate outstanding judgment and discretion.

Demonstrate understanding of the university’s mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.

Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences—including students, faculty, coaches, staff, families, leadership, alumni, donors and vendors.

Efficiently and effectively manage multiple, complex and results-oriented projects with both quick turn-around requirements and long lead times.

Operate in a highly organized fashion with attention to detail on all projects.

Work outside regular business hours as needed in order to perform job responsibilities, including being officially on-call.

Provide overall support as needed and assigned for department priorities.

Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.

A graduate degree is preferred.

At least ten years of related work experience in digital strategy and product management, with at least five years of team management experience, is necessary.

Thorough working knowledge of the full suite of Microsoft Office products is necessary.

Thorough working knowledge of the Google suite of digital analytics, content management systems, digital asset management systems, constituent relationship management systems (i.e., SalesForce), WordPress, as well as the full suite of Microsoft Office products is necessary.
