ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE AND PITZER COLLEGE:

Pomona College and Pitzer College are members of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions in Claremont, CA. The 21 varsity Pomona-Pitzer Athletic teams comprise of students from both colleges, and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the NCAA Division III.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director, Athletic Communications assists in all facets of sports information by promoting and publicizing the combined athletic program of Pomona College and Pitzer College. This position reports directly to the Associate Athletic Director, External Operations, and will serve as a key media contact for assigned Pomona-Pitzer varsity sports and assist with the athletic event operations. This position will also assist in planning and implementing a communication strategy for the entire Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation. This position may be responsible for hiring, processing personnel paperwork for, and in some cases directly supervising one or more student employees in the department. This position reports directly to the Associate Athletic Director, External Operations while also collaborating closely with communications colleagues and student assistants.

Reporting directly to the Associate Athletic Director, External Operations the Assistant Director, Athletic Communications performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Athletic CommunicationsAssist the Associate Athletic Director, External Operations with the coverage of all 21 varsity sportsServe as the primary contact for assigned sports producing online team record books, preparing pre-game information, game program, game stories, news releases, statistics, generating feature stories, video highlights, social media promotion, and other unique coverage for Sagehens.com Maintain close daily working relationships with Pomona-Pitzer athletes and coaches in the department in order to develop story ideas and stay informed of information and developments in colleges sports while also collaborating with Pomona and Pitzer college communication colleaguesAssist in the planning and management of home, post season events and select away eventsAssist in developing strategies to build campus spirit, attendance, and visibility around athletic eventsEstablishing and maintaining positive relations with media through strong interpersonal communication skillsHire, process personnel paperwork for, and in some cases directly supervise one or more student employees in the department.Coordinate special projects/tasks and provide assistance as assigned.Athletic Event Operations:

Oversight and leadership in the areas of event operations, home game management, and championship hosting for varsity athletics.Assist with the planning and overseeing of home event hosting and set up including hiring required staffing and security.Coordinate information for visiting teams.Attend home events as necessary.Recruitment and oversight of students and temporary staff involved in home game management.Coordinate and run regular game management meetings.Work alongside Head Coaches to understand home event needs and preferences.Participate and lead planning meetings for designated events.QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in the areas of sports journalism, communications, or related field. A valid driver's license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required. A minimum of 2 years of sports reporting, writing, editorial, website management, photography, and video production experience with specific experience in the areas of college sports information management and sports journalism strongly preferred.

This position must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills and abilities not listed below.

Deploy professional skills in sports reporting, writing, editorial, website management, photography, video production, and social media, in collaboration with the Director of Athletics, Associate Athletic Director, External Operations, Head Coaches, Student-Athletes and campus colleagues, to best promote the College's strategic interests.Must have a strong understanding and enthusiasm for sports as well as a familiarity with NCAA and Conference rules and regulations and NCAA statistics rules for various sports.Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with strong interpersonal communication. Must handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, tact, and a keen eye for detail.Able to operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook), associated professional software (such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro, StatCrew, NCAA Live Stats, and social media platforms).Demonstrated understanding of the use of technology to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.Able to operate cameras, video equipment, and other digital media.Able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the department and College in support of the College's strategic vision and the department annual goals with a high standard of integrity and ethics.Must have strong organizational skills. Able to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail.Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.Operate the College's vehicles safely for campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.

REQUIRED HOURS:

The regular hours for this full time position are at least 40 hours per week on a variable schedule. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS:

Regular, Full-time, benefits eligible, exempt position. The salary range for this role is between $66,560 to $67,216 annually, with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the organization will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include education, training, prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
