Job Summary

This position is 20 hours per week only and does not include Health Insurance.

MAJOR FUNCTION:

The Public Safety Communications Call Taker receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service. This position provides optimum customer service to callers under significant emotional strain and stress. Work is performed effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment under the general supervision of the Public Safety Communications Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor.Essential Job Functions

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS NEEDED TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Knowledge:Knowledge of geography of area, its road network and surrounding area. Knowledge of rules, regulations and procedures for call taking. Knowledge of the computer formats. Knowledge of computer aided dispatch (CAD).

Abilities:Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Ability to work under high stress. Ability to maintain a variety of clerical records. Ability to write and report information quickly, accurately, and correctly in English language. Ability to process and record data quickly on a data processing type card and other ledgers. Ability to type 30 words per minute after two months from the date of employment.

Ability to establish and maintain a satisfactory working relationship with co-workers and the general public. With training, ability to operate telephone equipment, and high-speed computer terminal. Ability to identify incoming call types and handle appropriately. Ability to workdays, nights, and weekends with the flexibility to change work schedule with limited notice.

Skills:Good diction and active listening. Good customer service skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:Receives all incoming calls on telephone lines and channels them to proper department. Receives all complaints and assigns complaint numbers.

Notifies fire department of all emergency messages related to fire or rescue. Performs related work as requested or assigned.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

During emergency conditions, all County employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. County employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

Must have good eyesight and good hearing in both ears and be capable of wearing a head set with an ear insert device during shift hours. Must have a clear speaking voice. Use of both hand and fingers with dexterity. Occasional walking and frequent standing. Ability to lift 30lbs occasionally. Ability to handle a high volume of stress. Good hand/eye coordination.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Constant work inside the office in a sedentary posture. Must be willing to do shift work.

WORK HAZARDS:

Possible vision dysfunction due to heavy computer work.

EDUCATION:

Graduation from a high school or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma, or an equivalent recognized certification.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 2 years' experience in a 9-1-1 Communications Center work as a Public Safety Telecommunicator.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION

:

Valid Florida'sDriver's License and must maintain a good driving record. A valid Florida Department of Health 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator (FSS 401.465) certification.

Driving Position - Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.
