Summary:

The Denver Post is seeking a reporter to cover one of the most exciting up-and-coming dining scenes in the country.

Are dumplings the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning? Do tamales feature heavily in your list of hobbies? Are you just as comfortable at a five-course dinner as you are at a hole-in-the-wall or food truck? Then you might be the right person for the job of food writer for The Denver Post.

We are seeking someone with a deep knowledge of cuisine and dining and a dedication to journalistic principles to cover a food scene that produces buzzworthy news daily. That includes restaurant openings and closings, celebrity chef news, dining trends, enterprise pieces, lists and much more. The position involves writing for both our print and online outlets.

What you will do:

* Researching, observing surroundings, and conducting interviews over the telephone and in person to gather pertinent information for news stories

* Organizing information to write an accurate, clear, interesting and grammatically correct story while meeting deadlines; discussing story formulation with editors and editing or rewriting stories as necessary

* Developing sources and checking with them on a regular basis to break exclusive news

* Understanding SEO techniques to ensure content reaches the largest online audience

* Creating and curating content for a dynamic newsletter

* Working closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments; shooting photos and videos when necessary

* Able to write a fast, accurate breaking news story for online as well as developing stories of varying complexity for the weekly food cover of the print sections

* Identifying and writing breaking news quickly and accurately

* Pitching stories and working on assignments with enthusiasm and close attention to detail

* Focusing on creating content that serves our region

* Utilizing user data as a key indicator of success and using that data to inform story choices

* Experimenting with, adapting to and suggesting digital storytelling approaches, formats and tools that better serve our readers

* Completing duties on time and with minimal oversight

What you will bring:

* Minimum of two years of reporting and writing for a major media outlet, preferably covering food and restaurants

* College degree or equivalent experience

* A demonstrated passion for using social media to engage audiences and expand reach

* Self-starter who is eager to learn and develop new skills

* Strong news judgement

* Works well independently and within a team; fosters a cooperative work environment

* Strong writing, grammar, and AP style skills; ability to work occasional night and weekend shifts

The hourly wage is $21.30 - $34.27. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
