POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Officer (Bilingual) supports districtwide strategic communications efforts by identifying, planning, and generating news and feature story content for Atlanta Public Schools. The incumbent works closely with the video production, design, and social media teams; APS event planners; and vendors to produce clear, engaging content about APS for all audiences.

The incumbent works closely with the video production, design, and social media teams; APS event planners; and vendors to produce clear, engaging content about APS for all audiences.

The Bilingual Officer serves as interpreter and translator (English and Spanish) for departmental and district communications as assigned and will be expected to translate blogs, video scripts, web copy, pitches, feature stories, social media posts, informational bulletins, and a variety of other internal and external communications. The incumbent will identify and manage new and innovative channels to communicate specifically to Latinx communities (ie: WhatsApp, Spanish language landing pages/websites and media outlets, and social media.)

The ideal candidate is organized with a keen attention to detail, is creative and flexible, can work effectively under tight deadlines, and is comfortable working independently or as part of a team.

The Bilingual Officer is expected to provide professional communications counsel as defined by the Executive Director of Communications. This position reports to the Director of Communications. This position requires occasional evening and weekend work hours and the ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:Bachelor's degree in related field (or equivalent experience) required.CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

Valid driver's license and availability of private transportation, or the ability to attend off-site eventsProfessional certification in translation and/or interpretation preferredWORK EXPEREINCE:

Four years of experience in communications, community relations, public engagement, public affairs, or related fieldEducation communications experience preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of social media, video/photography, website content management and all other components of a full-service communications departmentAdvanced knowledge of Google apps, Microsoft Office Suite, and translation technology toolsAdvanced proficiency in writing, reading, and speaking English and Spanish (incumbent must successfully complete APS Department of Multilingual Programs and Services approved coursework for official translation and interpretation training within 60 days of hire)Expert-level copyediting and proofreading skillsAbility to quickly produce high quality written contentAdvanced knowledge of Google apps, Microsoft Office SuiteEmail marketing (Constant Contact) and list management experienceTranscribing experience preferredOrganized with a keen attention to detailExcellent customer service skillsFlexible and adaptable to changing prioritiesComfortable in a deadline-driven environmentAbility to interact with all members of the communications team and the organizationESSENTIAL DUTIES

Works closely with school-level communication ambassadors, school and cluster administrators, and other key personnel across administrative departments, the incumbent is responsible for identifying and preparing messages as well as ideating and serving as a consultative thought-partner to help meet the communication needs of internal stakeholders.Identifies opportunities to highlight individual, school/department, and cluster accomplishments on a district level via multiple APS channels of engagement.Documents programs and accomplishments that align with the district's vision and mission via multiple APS channels of engagement.Serves as interpreter and translator (English and Spanish) for departmental and district communications.Serves as the main contact between the APS Office of Communications and the APS Department of Multilingual Programs and Services.Provides training and consultative support to school-level communications ambassadors.Attends district events on assignment, to provide communications support and story coverage.Collaborates with the editorial team to maintain a year-round editorial calendar; ideates, prepares, and pitches story ideas for inclusion in the district editorial calendar; Collaborates with the other communication officers, design and video production teams to ensure successful implementation of communication plans.Prepares content for and manages the APS Facebook en Espanol page, WhatsApp, and other channels specific to the Latinx community.Contributes to the production of communications materials needed for monthly Board of Education meetings.Translates, copy-edits and proofreads materials as assigned by the team's project coordinator, as needed.Serves on the district's crisis communications team during school and district emergencies.Builds and sustains relationships with key education advocates, media and community leaders in the Latinx Community.Provides monthly reports and tracking of key communications projects.Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needed.Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.PHYSICAL ABILITIES AND WORKING CONDITIONSThe physical abilities, working conditions and other conditions of employment listed in this document are representative of, but are not intended to provide an exhaustive list of the requirements for positions in this classification.
