Job Description

Hybrid:

Reporting to a specific location where work needs to be performed / collaboration should happen (regardless this location is within a hub) and without regard to where a candidate lives (some employees may end up hybrid who live more than 50 miles away but where business needs dictate them to be onsite at a specific location three days per week).

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to GM Austin IT Innovation Center

three times per week, at minimum.

This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.

About the Team:

Innovative design ideas are destined to be a catalyst to transform our automotive software and service experiences. The General Motors Interface Design team is dedicated to inventing, designing, and delivering our core software experiences in our vehicles and across our 1st party apps and branded websites.

About the Role:

Within the General Motors Software & Services Design org, our mission is to help GM employees have a better, more productive workday through the use of internal software. Design Kit ultimately enables more than 160,000 GM employees in the areas of Manufacturing, Engineering, Dealer Services, Vehicle Program Planning, and general staff, to create and deliver vehicles throughout the globe.

Our Enterprise Design team is seeking a talented and passionate

Design System Lead- UI Kit

to help elevate the quality of our Design System, Component Library, and UI Kit. As a manager in the Enterprise Design space, you will lead a small but mighty team of front-end developers working alongside a large team of designers, collaborating with teams of full-stack developers and stakeholders to craft highly streamlined, usable, and polished experiences for our internal customers.

The ideal candidate will have strong interaction and front-end development skills, a portfolio of user-centered and design system work, and a passion for user interface.

Additional Job Description

Responsibilities:

Lead a small team of UI Developers, collaborating with designers and the broader development network.

Evolve existing Design System, Figma Component Library, and UI Kits be easy for end-users to find and adopt into their design deliverables and final dev code.

Bring forward ideas that improve processes or efficiency, alleviate burden, or allow for innovation.

Understand how and when to roll out Design Kit changes to existing and new applications and how to manage legacy web, mobile, and XR apps that aren’t ready to take on Design Kit changes, or where change would disrupt the production of vehicles.

Requirements:

7+ years of experience creating user interfaces and developing digital design systems within mobile, web, and extended reality interfaces.

BA/BS degree or training in Front-End Development, Interaction Design, or related.

Strong portfolio with work samples showcasing expertise in design systems.

Familiarity with broad programming languages including Angular, React, and React Native.

Deep knowledge of Material Design and a working understanding of Android OS Development.

An understanding of WCAG requirements.

Open to feedback; knowing how to give and receive critique, and how and when to defend decisions.

Proficiency in Figma and FigJam.

Preferred Qualifications:

Automotive or other product engineering/manufacturing experience

Prototyping experience
