Level Up is an innovative large-scale mentoring program that utilizes paid BBBSMA mentors embedded full-time in middle schools to provide 1:1 and small group mentoring on a weekly basis. Mentors are in the school every day, so they are also available when students need them. Teachers, counselors and principals call on mentors to help address problems with individual students and de-escalate conflict. The program is designed to start with up to 100 sixth grade students at each school, who are served by two Lead Mentors, who can each serve 50 students (10 through 1:1 mentoring and 8 small groups of no more than 5 students each). We will continue to serve these students through eighth grade, when possible, while adding a new group of sixth-grade students each year, ultimately serving 300 students per school. Principals have identified sixth grade as the ideal point to start the program, as students make the difficult transition from elementary school to middle school. Issues faced by sixth graders include: managing peer pressure and bullying; learning to show initiative; regulating emotion; self-awareness and social skills; and perseverance when facing challenges.Level Up has already proved to be transformational for schools and our organization by exponentially increasing the number of children we serve. The program responds to a core equity issue we identified with our traditional program model: accessibility to mentoring for youth from marginalized communities. This program is a direct solution to that challenge, removing the barrier to entry by bringing mentoring directly to youth who might not otherwise be able to access it. overall.
