Director of Media & Public Relations

(“Director”) will be responsible for maintaining and creating valued, aligned relationships with key media partners and professionals. The Director will also oversee the development and execution of various publicity campaigns, ensuring Groundswell's brand image remains consistent and positive in the communities we serve. The Director will work alongside the VP of Marketing & Communications to develop communication strategies that support expanding to a wider audience.This role will work closely with leadership and across teams to create and implement a unified media strategy and oversee internal and external communications to the media, including preparing articles, press kits, press releases, and other content initiatives. Reporting to the VP of Marketing & Communications, the Director of Media & Public Relations must be a highly strategic thinker with excellent communication skills, capable of enhancing Groundswell's public image and maintaining its positive reputation.The ideal candidate is a values-aligned communications expert who has proven success in developing and executing external media and public relations strategies that support Groundswell overall mission, vision, and programs.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESMedia and Public Relations Strategy and ExecutionBuild and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and other media professionals.Develop and implement comprehensive media and public relations strategies that align with Groundswell's goals and values.Ensure all media and public relations partners, consultants, and contractors are aligned with Groundswell values.Lead and coordinate Groundswell press conferences, media briefings, and interviews.Serve as backup to the VP of Marketing and Communications and as a spokesperson for Groundswell, ensuring accurate and positive media coverage.Manage crisis communications strategies and responses alongside the VP of Marketing and Communications.Media Content and OversightIdentify key media opportunities to increase brand awareness.Develop media marketing plans to promote Groundswell events, products, and servicesCollaborate with Groundswell team members to leverage new media technology and strengthen awareness of Groundswell initiatives and programs.Maintain Groundswell media list and media contacts.Oversee day-to-day management of Groundswell media outlets (podcast, social media accounts, etc.)Public RelationsIdentify trends and monitor current events to anticipate opportunities for Groundswell.Lead media strategy, including messaging in press releases, as well as oversight of the development of press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests.Provide counsel to leadership for various press opportunities.Coordinate PR efforts for all Groundswell departments.Analyze and maintain PR campaign data and prepare reports as needed.Identify and lead event planning efforts to maximize Groundswell's brand and awareness.ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIESAs a member of the Groundswell team, the Director of Media & Communications is expected to participate in the overall execution of Groundswell programs:Support the pursuit of opportunities aligned with Groundswell’s mission and values.Seek opportunities to drive continuous improvement in Groundswell programs, processes, and practices.Key values that will be uplifted through the work of the Director of Media & Public Relations include:Integrity:

Employees based in Washington, DC, or near Groundswell’s Georgia office are expected to work in the office four days per month in accordance with Groundswell’s hybrid/remote work plan.POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURSThis is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and core hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.TRAVELOccasional travel will be required for this role.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEBachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred but not required.5+ years of leadership experience in media, communications, marketing, public relations, or external affairs.Must demonstrate successful development and execution of media/communications campaigns.Must demonstrate brand management experience.Professional experience in clean energy, environmental justice, or community development fields is preferred but not required.SUPERVISIONThe Director of Media & Public Relations will report to the VP of Marketing and Communications.COMPENSATIONCompensation for this position is in Groundswell’s established pay band for the Director title, and it includes a full-time employee benefits package.BENEFITSGroundswell pays 100% of the monthly premium for health, dental, vision, and long-term disability for full-time employees in accordance with Groundswell’s policy. Groundswell also covers 50% of spouses and dependents covered under the Groundswell healthcare, vision, and dental plan.Matching 401 (k) plan contribution by Groundswell up to 4% for employees who choose to contribute to Groundswell’s 401 (k) plan, with immediate vesting.Monthly Development Days to focus on professional development opportunities.$45 per month to reimburse cellular phone use for business purposes.$75 per month to reimburse home internet access for business purposes.Fifteen (15) paid vacation days per year, eight (8) sick days, and two (2) personal days. Vacation and sick leave accrue at the start of your employment, restart each year on January 1, and increase with tenure. Personal days begin after six months of employment.Groundswell also takes nine (9) paid federal holidays and a holiday break from December 24th to January 1st (inclusive).Short-term disability insurance, long-term disability insurance, and voluntary life are available.Pre-tax benefits such as smart benefits, flexible spending accounts, and dependent care are also available.For more information about the organization’s benefits and other personnel policies, Groundswell will provide a new hire orientation within the first week of employment.
