Job Description

The Vanderbilt Television News Archive (TVNA) at the Vanderbilt Libraries is seeking a Media Analyst (1- year TERM) to foster the integration of its collection of broadcast and cable television news into academic research and teaching. This role will facilitate advanced computational analysis of trends and patterns in television news programming in the context of other forms of media, including newspapers, radio, magazines, and social media.

The Vanderbilt Libraries are dedicated to supporting academic excellence and fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and resource sharing. The team is committed to transforming library services and enhancing research capabilities through advanced data management techniques and technologies, with a focus on TVNA and other unique collections.

Duties and Responsibilities

Design and run media studies, like machine learning, qualitative analysis, natural language processing, on the text transcripts, audio or moving image versions of the TV News Archive using Databricks, a machine learning and data science research tool.

Based on research mentioned above, organize and lead presentations, workshops, and training sessions to demonstrate the applications of the TVNA to coursework in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences.

Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with data scientists, artificial intelligence researchers, communications and media studies faculty, and other thought leaders to stay on the cutting-edge of multimodal media analysis.

Provide insights and feedback to the TVNA staff about the development of new tools and services that cater to the evolving demands of media researchers.

Contribute to the collection development strategy at the Vanderbilt Libraries to refine the TVNA's offerings, ensuring they align with current academic and research trends.

Represent the TVNA at academic conferences and seminars, enhancing its visibility and utility in the field of media studies.

Regularly present at scholarly conferences and publish peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed papers about media analysis.

Qualifications

A minimum of 3 years conducting data-driven analysis, research, and academic study of media is required.

Master’s degree in media studies, communications, data analysis, computer science, or a related discipline; Ph.D. preferred.

Strong communication and presentation skills, capable of engaging effectively with academic audiences.

Demonstrated ability in team collaboration and a proactive approach to sharing ideas and strategies.

Proficiency in data analysis using Python and machine learning frameworks; knowledge of Amazon Web Services and Databricks preferred.

Strong understanding of calculus, linear algebra, probability and discrete mathematics.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a changing environment is required.

Evidence of commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility; experience with the principles of Universal Design for Learning strongly preferred.

Experience with online learning platforms and/or creating digital tutorials, videos, and research guides is strongly preferred.

Experience working with or directing student workers is preferred.
