Manager, Operational Communications

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, the Operational Communications Manager will work closely with internal stakeholders including plant managers, manufacturing VPs, and HR teams. You will guide operational communications with a deep focus on our manufacturing employees as well as merging HR and business operational needs in order to drive recruitment, retention and engagement in a way that ties back to the business objectives and our purpose.

As an essential and trusted partner to these groups, you will develop processes and templates for them to more effectively share stories, manage change, and connect through employee communications.

This position is based in Chicago in a hybrid of remote and in-person work.

Responsibilities• Building Relationships: Forge strong connections with HRBPs, plant managers, leaders, influencers, and change champions. You will become the trusted business partner for these stakeholders and will become the go-to resource to help drive communications that effectively and efficiently drive messaging that is transparent, timely, accurate and resonates with the audience.• Communication Skills: You are diplomatic with a talent for thinking three steps ahead. You are able to help your partners move in a direction that will benefit them, their audience and the business.• Positioning Opportunities: You will find opportunities for improvement, both in existing and new communications and campaigns in order to drive recruitment, retention and engagement.• Engage Plant Workers: Work with Communication, HR, and Manufacturing colleagues to develop communication strategies that resonate with our plant-based employees• Strategic Communication Delivery: Craft and deliver daily business communications for internal stakeholders• Content development: Create and maintain the tools, templates, processes and ideas that stakeholders need to communicate effectively and efficiently with their teams.• Cultural Initiatives: Collaborate with HRBPs to create and implement communications that bring our strategic cultural initiatives to life and support their ongoing success.• Driving Engagement: Support leaders in promoting engagement in initiatives and campaigns across all plants. Work with regional leaders to ensure that these initiatives will resonate by taking local cultures and needs into account.• Upskilling Communicators: Partner with the wider business to enhance the skills of existing communicators and recruit new champions, ensuring consistency and excellence across all USG functions and sites.• Strategic Storytelling: Cultivate a culture of strategic storytelling throughout the business, enhancing engagement, recognition, and employee advocacy.• Tone of Voice: Create and ensure partners use corporate collateral and follow given brand guidelines and house style so that all partners are aligned with the global approach.• Support and Guidance: Provide education, guidance and support to internal partners on storytelling, engagement practices, and the "why" behind these and how they tie to our strategic pillars.• Industry Trends and Best Practices: Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to continually enhance our communication activities.• Data-Driven Improvements: Use data and analytics to evaluate communication strategies, track the effectiveness of communication activities, and make informed recommendations for improvements. Share findings and solutions with executive team.• Communications plan creation and execution experience.• Travel expected approximately 10 percent to company locations across North America.

Qualifications• Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field• Ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of prior experience in Public Relations/Corporate Communications; in-house corporate communications strongly preferred.• Self-starter, organized, motivated, strong ability to find solutions and work well within a team.• Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks on tight deadlines.• Excellent writing skills and a proven track record crafting stories that highlight a company and its people• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, editing skills and the ability to work with different teams across the business• Proficiency in AP style• Exceptional organizational and project management skills; ability to execute with changing priorities, exhibiting flexibility, resilience and grace under pressure. Attention to detail and follow-through.• Self-starter, organized, motivated, strong ability to find solutions• Proficient in MSOffice, including Word and PowerPoint, and able to learn communications platforms/systems. Google Analytics proficiency preferred.• Display elements of our leadership team's mantra of "Humble, Hungry, and Smart" from Patrick Lencioni's The Ideal Team Player.

*NOTE: USG follows a hybrid model where employees work in the corporate office 2 times per week, depending on the needs of the team.

Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
