JOB SUMMARY:The Birmingham Museum of Art is on the lookout for an Art Education Coordinator. This role entails the planning, development, and administration of educational programs for museum visitors, school groups, and the broader public. Coordinators oversee and host museum events, prepare event materials, assist in setting up and dismantling events, and work in collaboration with associated groups. Additionally, they are responsible for managing the museum's inventory for events, liaising with vendors, and engaging in diverse public relations efforts to enhance the museum's profile.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess the following:Bachelor's degree in Art History, Art Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Elementary or Secondary Education.

Experience teaching art education topics to K-12 groups (e.g., in an art museum or similar environment or a classroom setting, such as teaching art education within a science center, park, historical house, nature center.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes.

Master's degree in Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies, Museum Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Elementary or Secondary Education.

Art museum experience in a role serving youth and family audiences.

Supervisory experience.

JOB DUTIES:

Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:

Manages event (e.g., group tours, school programs, summer classes, etc.) scheduling and booking by gathering all event details and ensuring they are correct, creating files and charts to keep the event organized, accepting payments, and working with staff members to communicate and coordinate the schedule.

Prepares for various events (e.g., group tours, school programs, summer classes, etc.) by confirming attendance, coordinating work efforts, and collaborating with other groups who may be involved.

Prepares materials to be used at or during events by researching topics, preparing presentations, develops event specific materials, creates learning tools (e.g., activities, handouts, etc.), maintains museum archive/library materials, and provides materials to groups in advance of their event.

Participates in setting up for various events by determining the most appropriate set up based on the event being held, working with set up crews, transporting items and equipment to off-site locations, and assisting in the tear down after an event has ended.

Hosts various events by meeting and greeting groups upon their arrival to the event site, presenting the agenda and schedule of events to the group, informing the group of any rules that must be followed during the event, making presentations to the group, participating in activities, and collecting attendance data to use in planning future events.

Develops and implements education programs at the museum by utilizing the Alabama course of study to develop ideas, researching topics, building classes and activities for the curriculum, coordinating with area teachers, and identifying funding sources.

Manages museum projects by establishing goals and timelines, delegating responsibilities, reviewing work, working with staff, volunteers, and outside vendors.

Identifies goods and services needed to carry out day-to-day activities and special events by controlling inventory, reviewing and submitting requisitions, making purchases, and communicating with vendors to supply goods and/or services.

Procures goods and services by creating specifications and bid proposals, communicating with vendors, and negotiating contracts.

Performs administrative, supervisory, and personnel management tasks, including scheduling work of subordinates, counseling staff, balancing and maintaining budgets, and attending various meetings.

Conducts staffing duties including reviewing applications, developing and conducting interviews, and making hiring recommendations.

Conducts various public relations functions to promote events at the museum and to maintain communication between the museum and groups that use the facility frequently.

The City of Birmingham offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

Salary range: $45,510 - $ 70,616 (starting salary is commensurate with education and experience)

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting.Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.
