Posting Summary

The Director of Public Safety Communications and Technology for Tulane University’s Police Department plans, directs, and manages the operations of the Communications Center, oversees the records division, and maintains operational oversight of all departmental technologies. This individual will be responsible for the supervision of communications staff, management of departmental records, compliance with state and federal records laws, information technology, as well as property and evidence. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with established institutional and departmental goals, policies and procedures, as well as compliance with policies and procedures of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) as stated in the user agreement and cooperative endeavor agreement with TUPD. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for developing strategic growth as related to communications and other technology.

Demonstrated knowledge of industry technology

Demonstrated knowledge of State and Federal records requirements

Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills

Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting

Demonstrated problem-solving skills

Ability to provide direction and make decisions under pressure

Ability to organize, plan, and present operational goals and strategies

Ability and willingness to demonstrate respect and safeguard the dignity and rights of all individuals

Knowledge of university and police department rules, regulations, and other written directives and the ability to interpret and effectively implement such policies in the work environment

Ability to operate computerized equipment including basic typing/keyboarding skills and two-way radio.

Ability to multi-task

Thorough working knowledge of Communications Unit equipment and systems

Demonstrated knowledge of Federal, State, Local and other regulatory boards and requirements governing radio and electronic transmission

Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, officials of law enforcement, firefighting, and emergency medical care agencies, as well as representatives from other local, State, and Federal agencies and the public

Excellent analytical skills; ability to effectively compile, calculate, analyze and present statistical data

Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed

Required Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and three (3) years’ directly related experience

OR

High School Diploma/Equivalent and nine (9) years’ directly related experience. Intermediate Technology experience required

POST HIRE TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must successfully complete the following mandatory trainings, as well as obtain and retain all required certifications:

Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)

National Crime Information Center (NCIC)

Enhanced 911 training and certification

APCO Telecommunicator I and II certification

An approved Communications Officer training course and an approved department training program

Preferred Qualifications

Previous communications work experience in an academic or municipal environment
