Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, Natrium is participating in a DOE initiative to re-establish U.S. leadership in nuclear energy that provides matching funding to industry to design and build an operational advanced reactor. TerraPower, a leading advanced generation technology company founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, will be deploying its 345 MWe sodium fast reactor (SFR), called Natrium. The Natrium plant features an advanced, cost-competitive reactor design that is safer, simpler, easier and less costly to construct, less expensive to operate, and able to provide energy that is competitive with fossil fuels. It also features an innovative molten salt energy storage system designed to be complementary to solar and wind power by evening out the peaks and valleys in production when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. With the reactor and energy storage output combined, the plant can produce more than 500 MWe of power.Other Team Natrium partners include GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Energy Northwest, PacifiCorp, and Duke Energy, along with support from a number of national laboratories and universities. This role will support design development of Civil Site engineering designs for the project by preparing studies, drawings, and evaluations, in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. Work with other civil designers/engineers and technical disciplines in a team environment. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, a can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs.Major Responsibilities:
Originate and check Civil Site deliverables of moderate complexity, including drawings and 3-D models earthwork/site design.Interpret and verify industry standards, guidelines, and codes for project deliverables.Report design quantities compared to estimated quantities.Work with Civil/Structural supervisors to plan, budget and schedule drawing and 3-D model deliverables within the discipline.Participate in constructability reviews.Review and coordinate technical documents with/from other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction.Act as a mentor or coach for subordinate designers and drafters.Education and Experience Requirements:
BS degree in a related field with 8-10 years of related design experience or AA/AS degree with 11 years of related design experience. In lieu of a degree, 12-14 years of related design experience.This role requires a facility-specific clearance that requires U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency status.Required Knowledge and Skills:
Minimum QualificationsAdvanced experience in the use of AutoCAD and Civil3D.Work experience should emphasize Civil Site design of heavy industrial type facilities.Must be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.Familiar with the provisions of AASHTHO, ASTM, ACI, FHWA, MUTCD and WBDG UFC codes. Knowledge of construction materials and construction details and techniques.Familiar with the methods of procurement and control of bulk materials.Knowledge of technical responsibilities of other disciplines associated with Facilities Design.Ability to independently execute the detailed design drawings of Civil Site systems of moderate complexity.Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings and specifications.Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.Ability to resolve design issues with subordinates, other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.Ability to issue clear and concise direction to subordinate designers and drafters.Preferred QualificationsExperience in the sitework, earthwork, roadway, and drainage for Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment.AA in civil engineering or engineering technology.Six Sigma Yellow Belt or higher or working knowledge of other process improvement programs.For decades, Bechtel has worked to inspire the next generation of employees and beyond!
