Sunday, September 22 at 7:00 P.M.DESCRIPTION: City Council Member Alexa Avilés (District 38) seeks a full-time Communications Director for her office. The Communications Director will be a core member in ensuring we carry out a community-focused, compassionate and dedicated office of Council Member Alexa Avilés here in South Brooklyn. District 38 includes the entirety of Red Hook and portions of Gowanus, Park Slope, Sunset Park, Borough Park, Dyker Heights, Benshonhurst, and Bath Beach. District 38 is one of the most diverse districts in Brooklyn and home to many immigrant communities. In addition to English, the major languages spoken in District 38 are Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic.The Communications Director will be responsible for serving the district’s diverse and vibrant community . This role will include overseeing digital and print communications, as well as the creation and execution of accessible, effective, and creative communication strategies. Ideating, organizing, and executing press events, press releases, and story pitches. As well as drafting talking points for interviews and remarks for needed events.For two terms, our vision for the office is rooted in the humanity, dignity and solidarity of the working class.

In office, Alexa’s priorities are advancing education, housing, environmental and budget justice. Candidates must be based in New York City, and commuting to City Hall and other locations will be necessary.WHAT YOU’LL DO :Craft and implement the office’s communications strategy, setting messaging goals and strategies for all areas of our communications work, both in the district and citywide, in coordination with the Chief of Staff.Manage the office’s online communications work, including drafting and sending/posting district newsletters, event flyers, email blasts, overseeing and updating press and email contacts database, creating content templates, and collaborating with teammates on content.Draft copy and manage social media for the Council Member and for all District 38 official accounts, including creating a social media content calendar and real-time posts. Prepare metrics and reports on social media activity.Manage translation projects for office communications, ensuring translation accuracy and timeliness.Co-develop strong working relationships with reporters and editors, place stories in various outlets on a local and national scale, respond to press inquiries in various capacities (on the record, on background, off the record, etc.), and identify other communications opportunities that advance the goals of the officePlan press conferences, draft and distribute press releases and statements (including rapid response statements and statement requests, op-eds and other written pieces), and follow up with media for most effective coverage.Work with other Council Member offices, outside allies, and advocacy organizations (both in NYC and beyond) to coordinate effective communications strategies that advance shared policy, advocacy, and organizing goals.Prepare Council Member for interviews and speaking engagements, as needed.Ensure the Council Member’s website is updated and maximized which includes updating important and relevant information for constituents and highlights of Public Housing Committee activities.Providing news summaries to staff on items that impact the work of District 38Liaise with specific organizations and key areas in the district, with an eye of integrating and amplifying organizing and advocacy campaignsSupport implementation of community outreach strategiesRepresent the Council Member at meetings and staff Council Member at community events, as neededManage constituent cases and respond to phone calls, emails, walk-ins, and other inquiriesWHAT YOU’LL BRING :2-3 years of communications experience (ideally in New York City), in a government, politics or non-profit setting.Experience communicating to the press and public about policy and advocacy issues is a plusExperience speaking on the record is a plusAttention to detail, with excellent written and verbal communicationDetail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communications; ability to draft correspondence that ranges from routine to complexDemonstrated ability to adapt to and leverage an ever-changing media landscapeStrong news sense and knowledge of the media, including how to leverage specific news cyclesSome amount of graphic design skills, including website designThe ability to stay calm and successfully execute responsibilities in a fast-paced, high-pressure political and media environmentWorking proficiency in Spanish or other dominant language in the districtUnderstanding of the socioeconomic issues facing the district and/or working-class immigrant communities and communities of colorCommitment to political action that is feminist, pro-worker, pro-immigrant, anti-racist and anti-heterosexist; alignment with the core values and policy platform of Alexa Avilés’ 2021 City Council campaignPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :Bachelor’s degree and/or Master’s degreeOral and/or written proficiency in Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese), or Arabic strongly encouragedProficiency in: Canva and related design applications, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Airtable, Zoom, LinkTree, Mailchimp, Wordpress, Microsoft ProductsDistrict resident or has worked in the districtKnowledge of District 38 politicsRelationships with District 38 organizations and leadersADDITIONAL INFORMATION :New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.For eligible employees, health, dental, and vision insurance coverage are offered upon hire.
