Job Summary/Basic Function:

To maintain and repair hand and power tools; maintain tool and equipment inventory and supply room for applied technology or academic program labs at a University; procure, issue, and secure tools, supplies, and equipment; maintain computerized inventory systems; perform related work.

Department Overview:

The University Shop Assistant provides technical support to the Photography Emphasis Area in the Department of Art, Design, & Visual Studies by maintaining the safety, function, organization, inventory, and cleanliness of the facilities and equipment. The position will be responsible for managing our darkroom and film lab, ensuring that all photochemistry is mixed and maintained to the highest standards. You will also oversee the checkout and maintenance of photo equipment, including studio lighting kits, 35mm cameras, medium and large format cameras, and digital cameras. This position is benefit-eligible, working 32 hours per week.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the University Shop Assistant must:

Darkroom & Film Lab Management:

* Operate and maintain darkroom equipment, including enlargers, developing tanks, and printers.* Mix and maintain photo chemistry, ensuring accuracy and consistency in chemical solutions.* Process film, including developing, printing, and scanning, with attention to detail and quality.

Equipment Management:

* Oversee the checkout and return of photography and AV equipment in the entire Department of Art, Design, and Visual Studies, ensuring all items are in good working condition.* Maintain and calibrate studio lighting kits, cameras (35mm, medium, and large format), and digital cameras.* Provide technical support and guidance to students on equipment usage and troubleshooting.

Customer Service:

* Assist students with equipment selection and provide training as needed.* Address and resolve any issues or concerns related to equipment or lab services.* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.* Maintains computerized inventory system; prepares computerized inventory and work order reports;determines proper floor and shelf location for supplies; insures hazardous materials are stored and safely disposed; performs and reconciles physical inventory of supply warehouse; insures that Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) records are current for all products used; verifies quantity and quality of orders; tags supplies and stocks shelves; measures and mixes chemicals.

35% of time the University Shop Assistant must:

Administrative Duties:

* Ensure compliance with all safety and health regulations in Photography labs* Store and dispose of hazardous chemicals using proper Boise State safety protocols* Keep accurate records of equipment checkouts, returns, and maintenance* Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as necessary* Basic purchasing/ordering supplies and managing budget* Supervise student workers, verify student time cards are submitted in timely manner* Communicate with Art faculty regarding special needs and maintenance of darkroom facilities

5% of time the University Shop Assistant must:

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

* Proven experience as a photography lab technician or in a similar role.* Strong knowledge of darkroom processes, photo chemistry, and film development.* Proficiency with various types of photographic equipment, including studio lighting kits and different camera formats.* Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.* Strong communication and customer service skills.* Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of quality.

Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of: inventory methods; materials and supplies procurement and handling, storing, and shipping methods; MSDS sheets and safety procedures for caustic, flammable, and hazardous products.

Experience: using equipment service manuals to troubleshoot and repair or upgrade power tools and equipment; preparing written material and completing forms; filing and retrieving data using a computerized records system.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Formal education or certification in photography or a related field.* Experience with digital image processing and editing software.* Basic understanding of camera repair and maintenance.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is $18,000 to $21,500 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
