Departmental Job Description

The Mood Disorders Division of the Psychiatry department is looking to hire a Scientific Research Writer to assist the research division. The preferred candidate will have an advanced degree and experience in Psychology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, or Neurology; has experience writing publications, articles, and grants; is able to understand psychological/neuroscience data and transfer/translate it into clinical care to better detect and treat depression and mood disorders; has the capacity to think beyond expertise to interpret clinical and translational depression research data and communicate the impact of these research findings on clinical care; and can work independently to meet deadlines. Duties may include writing and editing scientific research papers, grant submissions, research study articles, and abstracts; working closely with Research Investigators to accurately communicate research results and study conclusions; shepherding documents from concept to publication; tracking publication schedules and deadlines; and working with researchers outside UTSW on collaborative publication projects. This position will support the writing efforts of the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN) through work with faculty and writers from 12 Health Related Institutions (HRIs) across the state of Texas.

Publication gives UTSW visibility in the scientific and medical communities which helps to reinforce our reputation and attract talent. This Scientific Research Writer will write and edit papers and articles for more than 18 UTSW Faculty and their numerous collaborators who are eager to focus on their research while also promoting their findings.

This position will also assist in the federal grants process.

Experience and Education

* Masters degree in Biology or related field of biological science, and two (2) years of related experience, including experience authoring research publications required. Ph.D. in related field preferred.

Job Duties

* Develop and maintain the scientific content of a comprehensive, web-accessible laboratory research data archive for use by internal and third party research organizations.

* Collaborate with PI\'s and other laboratory personnel to gather sufficient information for inclusion into the research database.

* Research and critically evaluate internal and external primary literature and biological databases, and compile relevant information to support the work of the subject laboratory.

* Coordinate the acquisition and submission of research data to relevant third party databases.

* Assist PI\'s and other researchers with grant submissions, and with preparation of papers for publication

* Maintain up to date knowledge of primary research subject matter through self-study, attendance at training seminars, etc.

* Perform other duties as assigned.
