Responsibilities

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) in Tallahassee, FL is seeking a Technical Research Designer to operate and maintain helium cryogenic systems and equipment. Candidate will operate, troubleshoot & maintain the NHMFL's cryogenic process systems. Operate the power supplies and support systems of the 45 Telsa Hybrid Magnet. Provide general support to scientists including assisting with cryogenic & magnet operations. Manage the distribution of liquid helium to scientific users & superconducting magnets. Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other power tools. Maintain calm demeanor in stressful situations and have a positive teamwork attitude. Implement and assist in development of the NHMFL's safety policies & procedures. Serve as technical resource for scientists and users of the NHMFL cryogenic systems. In consultation with supervisor(s) and design engineers, assist with determining changes in design and operation of cryogenic equipment to improve efficiency and reduce overall usage cost.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to seven years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

Candidates with an additional three years of related experience will be considered for levels III- VI. Each level requires an additional three years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in cryogenic or similar electromechanical system operation and maintenance. Sufficient training and experience to exercise skilled independent judgment in handling unexpected or emergency situations. Computer skills including use of office management software. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Experience working with different types of materials and ability to safely operate machinery, tools, and equipment. Ability to interact with laboratory scientists, researchers, and engineers.
