SUMMARY
The primary function of this position is to help prepare, write, and edit academic materials from Dr. Nicholas Navin group and the department of Systems Biology. This position will be focused on assisting in drafting, editing, and polishing scientific grants, progress reports, and research articles from the research team. The Navin Laboratory's primary research focus areas include single cell genomics, intratumor heterogeneity, and breast cancer evolution. An ideal candidates would have firm understanding cancer genomics and single cell technologies and the ability to translate technical jargon into different levels of professional communications, ranging from lay abstracts to academic journals and grants. This role is pivotal in securing grant funding as well as communicating the results for different single cell 'omic, cancer genomic and bioinformatic studies to research and lay communities.
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology or Computational Biology and experience working in computational biology or technology environment as well as grant or paper writing experience.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Manuscript and Grant preparation
* Research submission guidelines from journals and funding organizations.* Works with Grants Manager to make sure all submitted grants and progress reports are in the correct format and comply with organizational standards when submitted to OSP.* Prepares supplementary documents as needs (letters of support, lay abstracts, equipment documents, facilities documents, etc.)* Edits grants and manuscripts before submissions to make sure they comply organizational standards.* Proofreads galley proofs of manuscripts and press releases prior to publication.
Writing for lay audiences
* Assist the PI writing non-technical summaries, abstracts and updates for websites, news sites, journals, and grant agency.* Copyedits to journal or grant format for request non-technical documents (letters of support, lay abstracts, project narratives, etc.).* Assists the PI in editing and writing editorials, literature reviews and research summaries.
Writing for technical audiences
* Assist the PI writing technical summaries, abstracts and updates for websites, news sites, journals, and grant agency.* Copyedits to journal or grant format for technical documents.* Assists the PI in editing and writing editorials, literature reviews and research summaries.
Analytics reporting for progress reports
* Establish and maintains an organized system for recording grants, papers, and seminars for progress reports.* Generates analytic reports or appropriate graphics to represent the impact of research.* Generates graphics to illustrate scientific models or methods.
Service originated oral and Written Communication Skills
* Provide communication expertise to PI and lab members.* Have clear understanding of rhetoric and composition in an academic setting.* Providing a clear concise proses in the format desired for grant, article, reports, or news releases.* Meets with PI and team members to discuss ways to communicate results in projects and ideas in grants.* Works with administers and research team to manage website for sharing projects information and communication to disseminate the information.
Other duties as assigned.
Education
Required: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.
Experience
Required: Three years in oncology research to include two years writing and submitting grant/science proposals.
