We seek a highly skilled and experienced administrator with a broad range of competencies who will support and enhance the school's academic, professional, and community-driven mission.

The Chief of Staff serves as the primary unit expert and resource for the Director, faculty, and staff on University and College policies and procedures, including faculty promotion and tenure; award dossiers; faculty and staff searches; sabbaticals and leaves; FMLA; annual review of probationary faculty; and the annual reporting of outside professional activities and business procedures. This position also helps to interpret, develop, and implement SOM policies and procedures as warranted; mediates employment related disputes and grievances; plays a key role in implementing the School's strategic plan; and manages the School's financial, human, and facilities resources. This position also has administrative oversight of the Ted Mann Concert Hall and Student Services, and is responsible for managing accreditation needs and academic program reviews.

The starting salary range is $95,000-$115,000 annually.

Job Duties:Strategic Planning/Administration (40%)

Set strategic planning priorities in coordination and consultation with the Director to achieve the best use of SOM resources (i.e., operational budget, human resources, curricular, and facilities/space) to meet instructional, research, outreach and administrative needs.

Through oversight and management of processes and systems, support the development of new initiatives and realignment of existing programs and projects.

Serve as liaison on behalf of Director, faculty, staff, and students of the School of Music with CLA, other University and outside entities. Partner with the Director and faculty to establish and maintain important external relationships with professional, academic and community partners.

Coordinate data collection for responding to internal and external surveys-partner with the Director to develop external communication strategies, priorities and messages.

Manage and coordinate SOM external reviews, including Accreditation Reviews for the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and periodic Academic Program Reviews (APR).

Provide financial oversight of Ted Mann Concert Hall operations, budgeting, and contracts in collaboration with Ted Mann Concert Hall staff leadership.

HR/Supervision/Office Management (20%)

Serve as Chief of Staff, coordinating all aspects of SOM operations management.

Supervise civil service, labor represented and P&A personnel. Includes full supervisory authority for developing job descriptions and performance standards; assessing and reviewing staff performance for continuous improvements; coordinating and overseeing searches; hiring; training; orienting; assigning, monitoring and adjusting workloads; problem solving; disciplining; terminating and settling grievances.

Responsible for daily operations, including policy and procedure development and implementation.

Determine and allocate resources by monitoring staff duties and adjusting workloads as needed.

Develop the annual calendar, set deadlines and priorities. Initiate, identify and manage projects.

Financial Management (20%)

Responsible for fiscal activities including budgeting, managing expenditures and forecasting.

Partner with and advise the Director in the development of the annual and three-year budget plan, including drafting the initial iteration and linking resources to the School's overall vision and strategic directions.

Direct ongoing budget activities through coordinated effort with the College, the University Foundation (UMF), the Office of Research Administration and Technology and other campus units.

Coordinate SOM development, donor relations, and outreach activities with the collegiate Office of Institutional Advancement, UMF and University Relations, as appropriate.

Oversee the presentation of events that involve alumni and donors. Manage projections, spending plans and scholarship/fellowship awards.

Student Services Operations/ Curriculum (20%)

Oversee Student Services operations. Lead annual curriculum planning, including managing and communicating faculty workload plans with division heads.

Provide instructional resource projections, enrollment, and cost reports to SOM leadership to modify curricular plans efficiently and ensure funding stays within budget.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience and prior oversight of a small department or cross disciplinary team within a large and complex institution.

Experience supervising staff.

Experience in effective fiscal planning, management, and budgeting.

Project management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree preferred.

Experience working with faculty, staff, students, and administrators at a higher education institution.

Working knowledge of the academic fields of music or related disciplines.
